Chapter 8, Page 7, Book 21

To poke a wood fire is more solid enjoyment than almost anything else in the world

Charles Dudley Warner

August 7th - it’s the weekend, enjoy!

There is something about a fire on a dark night, a fire shared with others, that pulls the gloom right out of you.  We sat around a cheery little blaze with branches popping as they burned with the flames dancing , and although we hadn’t eaten that day, I could feel our spirits rise along with the smoke that drifted to the stars.

William Kent Krueger

Whether your wood fire is out doors or indoors, it’s enjoyable.  Some of the best days of my life were when we went camping and sat around the campfire on the weekends.

It wasn’t until I retired that I could do it during the week too.  Or on vacations for maybe a week at a time.

Now I am retired but no longer go camping nor do I have a fire pit to burn wood in.  I surely do miss it. Not only did we warm ourselves by the fire, we shared what we had done throughout the week, our hopes and dreams for the future and quite a few bad jokes too. The warm feeling I got laughing together can be beat.nkn

Thankfully some of children do have fire pits and make fires to sit around and a few still go camping and I can visit them.  I look forward to many more happy times sitting around the fire. And I have a chance to make some new memories to keep me warm and happy.

It’s important to make this wonderful memories happen.  They do give us courage and hope when things aren’t going well.

So I’m very thankful for all the wonderful memories I’ve got, as I’ve had some very tough days to go through and I have a feeling there will be more of them too..

We must make the best of what we’ve got when we have it and never stop making new memories.

Light a campfire and everyone’s a storyteller.

The fires are fewer these days, even in our own fire pit in North Carolina. BUT yes friendships were made and solidified around many camp fires. Just seeing that fire brings back so many memories from Florida to Alaska and San Diego to Nova Scotia. Those days are behind us now, but the memories hang tough.

What wonderful memories! It's been a long time since I enjoyed sitting around a real fire. Soon as the weather cools, we've decided to treat ourselves to one of Lowe's fire pits and start spending quality time outdoors.
