Chapter 7, Page 31, Book 18

You can’t always control the wind, but you can control your sails.

Anthony Robbins

Let go ...When you can’t change a situation, change yourself

He who cannot rest, cannot work;
he who cannot let go, cannot hold on;
he who cannot find footing, cannot go forward.

Henry Emerson Fosdick

Choose your battles and just give in on some points.  You don’t have to get your own way  every time, do you?

Let go of your concerns for awhile.  Table your problems and go for a drive or go to a movie or go shopping.  The respite is precious and then you can return to the issue with a clearer perspective.

Hit the reset button.  Whatever happened yesterday, forget about it. Get a new perspective.  Today is a new day.  Restart, begins now.

Germany Kent

We are what we think about.  When you think about something good, there is no room from bad thoughts to get into your mind.  Concentrating on trying not to think negative thoughts can actually increase them, but simply filling your mind with good things leaves no room for the bad things to get in.

Take time to roll over good thoughts over and over in your mind and this will help you to form the habit of thinking good things.

All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on

Chapter 7, Page 30, Book 18

If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.

Marc Anthony

Love what you do, until you can do what you love

I can do what I love or I love what I do.  Learn to love the task in front of you.

DeWitt Jones

Work takes up a big chunk of our lives so it is important to do what we love.  Most days are ordinary and don’t have anything special about the unless we make them special. To take time to celebrate and do things you enjoy is to celebrate life and keep yourself in a good frame of mind.

Don’t worry about what the world needs.  Ask what makes you come alive and do that, because what the world need is people who have come alive.

Howard Thurman

If you do what you love, you will love what you do.  When you start to feel down, just take time to do something that lifts your mood and helps you feel better. To enjoy everyday life, celebrate the ordinary.  Sit in th sun, take a walk in the midst of your everyday activities.  No day needs be ordinary if we realize the gift God is giving us when he gives us another day.

If you are doing everything with love, you can love everything you do.

Chapter 7, Page 29, Book 18

Where there is faith, there is love;
Where there is love, there is peace;
Where there is peace, there is God;
And where there is God;
there is no need.

Leo Tolstoy

things that bring peace

Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.

Barbara Miller

Peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no trouble or hard realities to deal with .  Peace means to be in the midst of all and remain peaceful.

Distractions, especially the noise we face every day from the myriad forms of media and entertainment can make it difficult to quiet our minds.

Things were never easy.  Things do not always go as you hope, but that is life.

Peace begins with a smile.  Smile five times a day at someone you don’t really want to smile at at all.  Do it for peace.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Living a peaceful life is learning how to make the best out of the worst situations.  Inner peace comes from within.  I found this list of 9 ways to find peace of mind in tough times to share with you all today.

Learn to trust yourself. It isn’t as bad as you sometimes think it is

Focus on what you’re learning

Ease your expectations

Open up to someone you trust

Use hope to drive positive action

Move towards something instead of away

Take a few steps back

Give yourself time.

I am content to be where I am, and with what I have.  If you focus more on the things like the beauty around you in the moment and gratitude, the mind remains calm and peaceful.

Don’t over complicate your life, with simplicity comes peace of mind.

Peace is always beautiful.

Chapter 7, Page 28, Book 18

It is not our mistakes that define who we are; it is how we recover from those mistakes.

Bo Bennett

We are not our bad days, we are not our mistakes.

Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes.

Oscar Wilde

Everyone makes mistakes, we are all unmistakably imperfect. The best we can do, is maybe to get a little wisdom so we don’t make the same mistakes all over again.

When you have a bad day, a really bad day, try and treat the world better than it treated you.

Patrick Stump

Truth is that on the bad days we need to be a little kinder to ourselves and to others.  It doesn’t take much to turn yours or someone else’s day around.  We all have bad days and we all need a little kindness.

There are no mistakes, no coincidences.  All events are blessings given to us to learn from.

Chapter 7, Page 27, Book 18

There is only the moment.  The now.  Only what you are experiencing at this second is real.  This does not mean you live for the moment.  It means you live in the moment.

Leo Buscaglia

The present moment is the perfect time to begin

Best to take the moment present, as a present for the moment

Stephen Sondheim

Living in the moment is not aways easy. Sometimes our thoughts are overwhelmed by regrets or anxiety about the future.  Our moments add up to minutes, the minutes add up to hours, and the hours add up to days and the days add up to months and the months add up to years and so it goes.

The moments is where we are, now.  What we do with the moments we have is what we do with our lives.

If you can live only live one moment at a time, you might as well make it the present.

Life is a succession of moments.  To live each one is to succeed.

Chapter 7, Page 26, Book 18

Every day I wake up, it’s a privilege to be able to go outside and do what I love…

Venus Williams

We take the privileges we have for granted

Understand that the right to choose your own path is a sacred privilege.  Use it .  Dwell in possibility.

Oprah Winfrey

It is truly a privilege to be alive and do what I want, when I want and how I want to.  So many do not have the privileges I have due to where they live, work, or because of sickness or disability.    I really should not ever have any reason to complain.

Compared to what some go through, my life has been a piece of cake.  There has been much more sweetness in it, than the bitterness that life some times brings our way and I am very thankful for that.

The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.

Joseph Campbell

I’m not perfect, nor am I rich but still I have everything I need.  I believe this is a privilege not of my own making but is a gift from God.  That is why I count my blessings every day and am so very thankful for them.

There are days that I forget the wonderful privileges I do have in life, but then I hear about the unfortunate, the needy and the forgotten and remember to always be thankful for what I have.

Life is a gift, and it offers the privilege , opportunity , and responsibility to give something back by becoming more.

Chapter 7, Page 25, Book 18

Every ending is a new beginning.  Through the grace of God, we can always start again.

Marianne Williamson

There is always room for a new idea a new step…a new beginning

Every day is a new beginning.  Treat it that way.  Stay away from what might have been, and look at what can be.

Marsh Petrie Sue

Life is full on new beginnings. Each morning and each day is a fresh start.  Every day when we wake up we have the chance to live this new day.  It’s like a clean slate.

Every day you make the decision how to act or to react on the events of your life.  We can drag the past along with us or let it go and begin again.

Starting over is not the same as recouping from a failure.  It is a new beginning. By embracing each day as a new start, a new adventure, we get so much more out of life.

Every day is a new beginning.  Take a deep breath and start again.

Chapter 7, Page 24, Book 18

Hooray!  They have finally found a diagnosis for my condition.  I have AAADD.  Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder.

This is how it goes:

I decide to wash the car:  I start toward the garage and notice the mail on the table. Ok, I’m going to wash the car.  Bt first I’m going to go through the mail.

I lay the car keys down on the desk, discard the junk mail and I notice the trash can is full.  OK, I’ll just put the bills on my desk and take the trash can out, but since I’m going to be near the mailbox anyway, I’ll pay those few bills first.

Now where is my checkbook?  Oops there is only one check left.  My extra checks are in my desk.

Oh, there’s the coke I was drinking.  I’m going to look for those checks.  But first I need to put my coke further away from the computer, oh maybe I’ll pop it into the fridge to keep it cold for awhile.

I head towards the kitchen and my flowers catch my eye, they need some water.  I set the coke on the counter and uh oh!  There are my glasses.  I was looking for them all morning.  I better put them away first.  I fill the container with water and head for the flowerpots — Aaagh!

Someone left the remote in the kitchen.  We’ll never think to look in the kitchen tonight when we want to watch television so I’d better put it back in the family room where it belongs.

I splash some water into the pots and onto the floor, I throw the remote onto a soft cushion on the sofa and head back down the hall trying to figure out what it was I was going to do.

End of the Day:  The car isn’t washed, the bills are still unpaid and the coke is sitting on the kitchen counter, the flowers are half watered, the checkbook still only has one check in it and I can’t seem to find my car keys!

When I try to figure out how come nothing got done today, I’m baffled because I know I was busy all day long!  I realize that this is a serious condition and I’ll get help, but first I think I’ll check my email…

Please send this to everyone you know because I don’t remember if I sent it or not!

As we age we value time more and more.

Perhaps one has to be very old before one learns to be amused rather than shocked.

Pearl S. Buck

If you think time is flying by way too fast, just wait till you get to be my age.  Everything I do takes more time.  Before the day ends, I only manage to do half of what I used to do.  I’m up early every morning and so appreciate that time of day.  I do my prayers, my scripture readings and daily devotions, I write a blog post and send a daily email to my loved ones.  I enjoy a couple of cups of good coffee and before I know it, it’s almost noon.

I think I make good use of my time and value every every minute I get, still time passes by fast and it’s evening before I’m barely started.

I do make plans and set goals, but what I hope to accomplish in one day, very often takes up most of the week.  As I sit here typing the washer and dryer are doing their jobs, but the laundry may not get put away until tomorrow.

Still and all I am enjoying every bit of my old age and am thankful for it.  I like to think I’ve mellowed as I’ve aged and things that used to be important no longer matter, but the important things in my life:  my faith, my family and friends matter more and more.

Time is too short to be anything else but happy !

Do not deprive me of my age.  I have earned it.

Chapter 7, Page 23, Book 18

Focus on what it is that you want, set a realistic goal, Start setting goals that you feel you can accomplice.  Don’t try to go right to the top in one leap.  Every time you accomplish a goal you develop the strength and wisdom to accomplish the next one.

Chuck Norris

 Focus on what is important

Whatever you focus on is what you get.

Anthony Robbins

It’s important to set goals because goals give you focus.  Setting goals give your life direction and boosts your motivation.

By setting goals we are able to focus on what is important to us.  They remind us of what we need to concentrate on.  Choosing what is most important in your life and then focusing on that in everything you do gets everything in the right perspective.

Once you place your attention on the what is truly important to you and focus on that everything else seems to fall in place.  If your goal doesn’t mean anything to you then it isn’t worth pursuing.  Tie your goals to your deeper values that give them more meaning.

If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.

Chapter 7, Page 22, Book 18

The Parable of the Pencil

The Pencil Maker took the pencil aside, just before putting into the box.  There are 5 things you need to know, he told the pencil, Before I send you out into the world.  Always remember them and never forget, and you will become the best pencil you can be.

One:  You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in Someone’s hand.

Two:  You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but you’ll need it to become a better pencil.

Three:  You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make.

Four:  The most important part of you will always be what’s inside.

Five:  On the surface you are used on, you must leave your mark.  No matter the condition, you must continue to write.

The pencil understood and promised to remember and went into the box with purpose in its heart.

Now replacing the place of the pencil with you.  Always remember them and never forget and you will become the best person you can be.

One:  you will be able to do many great things, but only if you all our yourself to be held in God’s hand.  And allow other human beings to access you for the many gifts you possess

Two:  You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, by going through various problems, but you’ll need it to become a stronger person.

Three:  You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make.

Four:  the most important part of you will always be what’s on the inside.

Five:  On every surface you walk through, you must leave your mark.  No matter what the situation, you must continue to do your duties.

By understanding and remember, let us proceed with our life on this earth having a meaningful purpose in our heart.

We are all human, embrace your imperfections

Better to do something imperfectly than to do nothing perfectly.

Robert H. Schuller

We are all human and make mistakes. We stumble, we fail, we get hurt, we rise again and we try again.  What matters is how we grow from our experiences.

Its not the failures that define us so much as how we respond to them.  We need to forgive ourselves and forgive others and move on.

If you make a mistake today, don’t fret.  Everyone else around you has made a bunch too.  We live and we learn and we grow.

No one is perfect — that’s why pencils have erasers.

Chapter 7, Page 21, Book 18

Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.

Abraham Lincoln

 Don’t wait for happiness.

The first step toward happiness is to determine to be happy

George Hodges

Truth is that if we wait until we feel 100% ready, we will be waiting forever.  Some people wait all day for 5pm, all week for Friday, all year for the holidays, all their lives for happiness.

We cannot wait for the perfect moment to be happy.   What matters is what you do in this moment, right now.  Don’t wait because life is just too short.

For me it’s a waste of time to be anything but happy.  I don’t want to spend my days arguing or fighting with someone.  I don’t have time for that.  I want to make every day the best one possible.

I try to look on the bright side of every situation.  Every day may not be a good one but there is something good to be found in every day if we look for it.

Life is to be enjoyed, not just endured.  Don’t cry over the past, it’s gone.  Don’t stress about the future, it hasn’t arrived.  By doing our best to live now, we make the moments worth living.

Happiness it the only good.  The place to be happy is here.  The time to be happy is now.  The way to be happy is to make others so.

Robert Ingersoll

Chapter 7, Page 20, Book 18

You have no control over what the other guy does.  You only have control over what you do.

A.J. Kitt

We can’t control what people say and do but we can control what we do

At the end of the day, you’re responsible for yourself and your actions and that’s all you can control.  So rather than be frustrated with what you can’t control, try to fix the things you can.

Kevin Garnett

As much as we would like to control what people say and do, we can’t.  The only person we can control is ourself.  We can control what we do and how we react.  We can choose not to let negative people steel our time and energy.

Dealing with a negative person can be quite a downer. Sometimes we just have to distance ourselves and set limits to the time we spend with them.  We don’t have to lower ourselves to their level.

We either accept people as they are or choose to walk away.  You can’t control what they do, but we can control ourselves.  Take a deep breath and decide that you’re going to make it a great day despite what others say or do. Decide that you’re not going to allow negative people determine how you think, feel and behave.

I believe the only thing that we really have control over is our attitude.  If we focus on the positive things in our lives and learn how to cope with all the surprises, we will be happier people.

Chapter 7, Page 19, Book 18

Anger always comes from frustrated expectations.

Elliot Larson

Don’t be disappointed by your expectations of what people do.

Once we reach a certain age, we tend to recalibrate our expectations.  We expect less from the wold once we’ve seen it up close.

Marianne Williamson

They say if we don’t want to be disappointed , we must first choose not to expect anything.  I have a hard time with no expectations.  I’ve always placed high expectations on myself and on others and yes I’ve had cause for disappointment too.

Truth is that we need to respect people for who they are and not for what we want them to be.    We need to love people for who they are.  People are not always going to be who we want them to be, they don’t change because we want them to.  They are who they are.

Even though it’s hard for many of us to see, the moment we get frustrated over what some one has done or said, something that may be unacceptable to us, we are in fact choosing to do so.  It’s a choice each one of us has to make.

People rarely behave the way we want them to, but we can can accept them as they are and hope for the best.   We are all different and we all see life from a different perspective.

There will be people that try to drag us down with them, there will be people that are feeling miserable and try to make us feel miserable too, but we have a choice.

The world is as it is, people are as they are.  We cannot change them but we can definitely change ourselves, and that is what will make all the difference.

By  greatly reducing our expectations, we greatly reduce the amount of disappointment in our lives and reduced disappointment leads to increased optimism — because few people can retain optimism after suffering repeated disappointment.

Dennis Prager
