New Year Day # 31

Motivation is what gets you started.
Habit is what keeps you going.

Author Unknown

After a not so good 2017,  I became very motivated to have a happier 2018 and have spent the month of January searching out and finding everything I could share about Happiness.  I think I’m well on my way to forming the happiness habit for now and that was my goal.

Should I slip up, all I have to do is refer back to these posts.  Thanks to Blogger I now have a quick and ready reference on hand.

Growth is painful.
Change is painful.
but nothing is as painful
as staying stuck somewhere
you don’t belong.

Author Unknown

This is one habit that I want to keep.  A habit for life not just the New Year.

Thanks for sticking with me this month.  All your comments were very appreciated.  I hope a little of what I found will have helped you too.

Tomorrow we welcome a new month, February, which is all about hearts and flowers and love.

LOVE will be my new topic and I’m sure there will be a lot to share on that subject.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.  Love never fails.

Chapter 1, Page 30, Book 18

New Year Day # 30

Once we discover how to appreciate the timeless values in our daily experiences, we can enjoy the best things in life.

Harry Hepner

They say that people with a solid value system are generally happier.  Values like integrity, loyalty, faith, compassion, courage and a sense of community, all work together to give us inner direction and purpose.

It’s not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are

Roy Disney

Values are who you are, not who you think you should be in order to fit in. Values build and help you to bounce back from adversity and embrace new opportunities.

Values lead us to better decision making and satisfaction around those decisions and an overall feeling of happiness about day to day life.

Anything that changes your values changes your behavior

New Year Day #29

Life is to be fortified by many friendships. To love, and be loved, is the greatest happiness of existence.

Sydney Smith

Friendship is one of the greatest joys of life.  Over the years I’ve had many friends.  Some go and some stay, but all have been an important part of my life.  Some of my family are also my friends and some of my friends are like family.   Having good friends that love and support you for who you are is really important to your happiness.

Best friends make the good times better and the hard times easier.

Author Unknown

My friends, my faith and my family are the three most important things in my life.  And each is  necessary part of who and what I am.  Each is essential to my happiness.

We should never take our friends for granted and let them know as often as we can just how important they are in our lives.

A friends knows the song in my heart and sings it to me when my memory fails.

Donna Roberts

It’s not the number of friends that you have, it’s the quality of close relationships that matters.  Some of my best friends are those that I can go years without seeing and still feel like other has changed when we reconnect.  Friends inspire and encourage us, lend support and lift us up.

Remember, we all stumble, every one of us.  That’s why it’s a comfort to go hand in hand.

Chapter 1, Page 28, Book 18

New Year Day 28

in order to be happy in the present moment
you have to be willing
to give up all hope for a better past.

Robert Holden, PhD

A new year has arrived and so has the opportunity to move on from things that hold us back.  The past cannot be changed so letting go of it is our best hope for happiness today or in the future.  Holding on to the past keeps us from enjoying what can be.

Why let go of yesterday? Because yesterday has already let go of you.

Steve Maraboli

We need to accept the end of something in order to build some new.  Happiness requires letting go and learning to forget.  Worry won’t change the past so we need to forget what cannot be changed and focus on the present moment.

Everything constantly changes and we can not stop it.  It’s our choice whether to resist and resent those changes or to be happy.  There are somethings that are definitely worth holding on to like our faith and what we consider to be important, but the past is gone and will never return…let it go.

All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on.

Chapter 1, Page 27, Book 18

New Year Day # 27

There is more to life than increasing its speed.

Mohandas K. Gandhi

Sometimes life gets so busy that we forget to slow down and enjoy the simple things in life. Life doesn’t have to be so crazy. All it takes is slowing down.  By slowing down,  you will be healthier but also happier in the long run.

You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry, don’t worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way.

Walter Hagen

It’s life in the slow lane for me.  It seems the hurrier I go the behinder I get.  When I try to go too fast, I make mistakes that actually make me use more time that I should.  By taking time to do things, I’ll get them done faster than when I hurry.

For fast acting relief try slowing down.

Lily Tomlin

Slowing down means being present, living each moment fully, putting quality before quantity in everything.

Slow down and enjoy life. It's not only the scenery you miss by going to fast – you also miss the sense of where you are going and why.

Eddie Cantor

Chapter 1, Page 26, Book 18

New Year Day #26

An entire sea of water can’t sink a ship
unless it gets inside the ship.
the negativity of the world can’t put you down
unless you allow it to get inside you.
Author Unknown

It is truly sad how easy it is to be negative in a world where there is so much to be positive and happy about.  Life is too short to put up with negativity and not see the positive in every situation.

They say that people are much nicer when they’re happier, which says a lot about those who aren’t very nice to us.  Sad, but true.  The way we treat people we disagree with is a report card on what we’ve learned about love, compassion and kindness.

Remember that nobody can make you unhappy, no situation can make you sad or miserable unless you allow it to. It’s not the situation that triggers those feelings in you, but how you choose to look at it.  Live your life and ignore the negativity.

I found these wise words of advice in an article I read recently:

Instill more love into this world.

Love what you do, until you can do what you love.

Love where you are, until you can be where you love.

And, above all, love the people you are with, until you can be with the people you love most.

Fewer judgments.  Less resistance.  More love.

Ultimately, this is the way we find happiness, opportunity, and peace in life.

The best way of removing negativity is to laugh and be joyous.

Chapter 1, Page 25, Book 18

New Year Day # 25

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self centered.
 Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies.
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you.
Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight.
Create anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today will often be forgotten.
Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough.
Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God.  It was never between you and them anyway.

Mother Teresa

There's a simple secret to achieving happiness, balance, and better health: letting go of past hurts and absolving the people who've caused them

Happy people understand that it's better to forgive and forget than to let their negative feelings crowd out their positive feelings.
Forgiveness comes from within, and even though sometimes it may seem difficult to forgive when you finally do it, you will feel lighter, happier and more liberated than you’ve ever felt before.

A lack of forgiveness lies at the heart of many problems; learning to let it go, thereby releasing you from its prison, can only result in one thing - happiness.

To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love. In return, you will receive untold peace and happiness.

Robert Muller

Forgiveness is an important part of a happy life. It can be hard to forgive yourself and others, but you will never be happy if you feel hatred. Learn how to forgive people around you and cultivate gratitude each day. It’s the key to enormous happiness!

Forgiveness is a funny thing. It warms the heart and cools the sting.

Chapter 1, Page 24, Book 18

A man has to live with himself, and he should see to it that he always has good company.

Charles Evans Hughes

Since I live alone, I am often my own best company.   I can also be my own worst enemy.  Truth is that it’s always best to be on good terms with yourself.  We need to treat ourselves with the respect, admiration and pride we would with any other best friend

If I didn’t like myself, I’d be pretty miserable most of the time, but thankfully I don’t rely on the presence of others to make me happy.

Let's face it, the relationship we have with ourselves is the longest lasting relationship we will ever have and the most important.  Over the years I’ve learned that it is important to be  your own best friend and love yourself in order to be there and care for others to. We cannot be good for others if we aren’t first good to ourselves.

Although I am blessed with some very special people in my life, I can exist and be happy by myself too.   We should never rely on others to make us happy.  Happiness comes with in each of us.  Happiness is an inside job.

The world is a looking glass, and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face.  Frown at it, and it will look sourly upon; laugh at it and with it, and it is a jolly, kind companion.

 William Thackeray

Chapter 1, Page 23, Book 18

New Year Day # 23

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine...

The best gift you could give the world is your happiness.  If there’s one thing we can use less of, it’s negative attitudes. The future can be anything we want it to be. All we have to do is choose.

Simply shine your light on the road ahead, and you are helping others to see their way out of darkness.

Katrina Mayer

Happiness never decreases by being shared. A smile can be a symbolic way to light up someone’s world. Or you may say a kind word or offer a sign of hope to someone who’s suffering. Light can manifest in many forms.

To shine your brightest light is to be who you truly are.

J.R.R. Tolkien

Chapter 1, Page 22, Book 18

New Year Day #22

The meaning of life is to find your gift.
The purpose is to give it away.

 Pablo Picasso

None of us handle God's gifts perfectly. We fumble and squander. They’re not just things we do with our time. Our gifts reflect who we are at our very core, and who the world needs us to be. When we deny that, we deny our true nature and cause ourselves a lot of pain.

Our gifts point us in the right direction, help us focus, and show us a clear path to joy. When we discover our gifts and learn how to use them, we no longer worry about who we are and why we’re here.

When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, I used everything you gave me.

Erma Bombeck

Talents are like gifts that you received when you were born. They are to be found within yourself.

When we do what we’re good at, what we truly love to do, and we share it with the world, it helps other people find their way, too.

Your talent is God's gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back to God.

Chapter 1, Page 21, Book 18

New Year Day # 21

A traveler crossed a frozen stream
in trembling fear one day;
Later another drove across,
and whistled all the way.
Great and little faith alike
were granted safe convoy;
One had pangs of needless fear,
the other all the joy.

Author Unknown

Fear is an enemy of faith. The relationship between faith and fear is like a seesaw. When one is up, the other is down. So when we allow fear to rise, our faith will decline. But the opposite is true as well. The more faith we have, the less fear we’ll have.

Sometimes fear is necessary, but often times it is not. Don't let fear steal your joy.

Said the robin to the sparrow,
‘I should really like to know,
Why these anxious human beings
Rush about and worry so.’
Said the sparrow to the robin,
‘Friend, I think that it must be,
That they have no heavenly Father
Such as cares for you and me.’

Author Unknown

I keep this little brown bird displayed where I can see it every day to remind me that like the sparrow I am in God’s care.

Six Life Lessons from Birds

Be confident.

Birds learn to trust themselves before they take off in the sky. So have faith in your abilities and know that you will find a warm current to soar in.

 Let your colors shine.

Different birds have hundreds of different hues. Be bright and make sure you aren’t hiding what makes you one of a kind.

Show up early and often.

The legendary early bird gets the worm for a reason. So find something worth showing up for, and then show up every day.

Go with the seasons.

Birds thrive despite changes in their environment. Be fluid and go with the flow, trusting your ability to always find a branch to land on.

Flock together.

Birds seek strength and sustenance from one another. Keep friends and family close by as you navigate the days.

 Spread your wings.

Eventually, all birds must leave the safety of the nest and become what they are meant to be. Have no fear of falling, and start flapping.

It may be that we need to remember that we have more in common with them than we'd like to think.

The reason birds can fly and we can't is simply because they have perfect faith, for to have faith is to have wings.

Chapter 1, Page 20, Book 18

New Year Day # 20

One day at a time - this is enough. Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone; and do not be troubled about the future, for it has not yet come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering.

Ida Scott

By focusing on life one day at a time, you’re free to enjoy what is right in front of you. You’re free to be happy. Life won’t pass you by when you’re consciously choosing to center our attention on the present moment.

We often get so caught up in the future and consumed by the past that we can’t even see what’s right in front of us. Focus on the present moment and be happy for it, because this moment is your life.

When people go through something rough in life, they say, 'I'm taking it one day at a time.' Yes, so is everybody. Because that's how time works.

Hannibal Buress

Truly living and loving this moment means letting go of all the expectations of what it should or could be. Do your best to focus on your present blessings and be thankful for it all.

Remember the richest person isn’t the one who has the most but the one who needs less.  Happiness is letting go and appreciating everything that is in your life now.

When we let go of the life we expected to have, we can accept the life that’s waiting for us. We can approach each of life’s moments with wonder and we can only do this one day at a time.

Just for today…
I’ll try to see the sunny side of any situation…
I’ll be an optimist

Just for today…
I’ll try to be a bright moment in someone’s life, with a word of kindness or a favor.

Just for today…
I’ll really appreciate all the good things and not dwell on the bad.
Just for today…

Chapter 1, Page 19, Book 18

May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy.

New Year Day # 19

The Way We Affect Others

We may not always realize
that everything we do,
affects not only our lives,
but touches others too.

A single happy smile
can always brighten up the day,
for anyone who happens
to be passing by your way.

And a little bit of thoughtfulness
that shows someone you care,
creates a ray of sunshine
for both of you to share.

Yes, every time you offer
someone a helping hand,
every time you show a friend
you understand.

Every time you have a kind
and gentle word to give,
you help someone to find beauty
in this precious life we live.

For happiness brings happiness
and loving ways bring love,
and giving is the treasure,
that contentment is made of.

Author Unknown

One of the biggest mistakes we make in life is forgetting how much our actions influence the people around us. Every day …  Everything we do and think affects the people in our lives, and their reactions in turn affect others. As the effect of a seemingly insignificant word passes from person to person, its impact grows and can become a source of great joy, inspiration, anxiety, or pain.

Happiness is contagious.  Turns out, misery may not love company, but happiness does.  Research suggests that happiness is influenced not only by the people you know, but by the people they know.  We can catch happiness from friends and family members like an emotional virus.  Your happiness could influence the happiness of someone you've never even met.

Surrounding ourselves with happier people will make us happier, make the people close to us happier, and make the people close to them happier.

Smile and the world smiles with you!

A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and outcomes. It is a catalyst and it sparks extraordinary results.

New Year Day #18

10 Step Program For Happiness

Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctor worry about them. That is why you pay him/her.

Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. An idle mind is the devil's workshop, The devil's name is Depression.

Enjoy the simple things. When the children are young, that is all that you can afford. When they are in college, that is all that you can afford. When you are on retirement, that is all that you can afford.

Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath. Laugh so much that you can be tracked in the store by your distinctive laughter.

The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be alive while you are alive.

Surround yourself with what you love, whether it is family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

Cherish your health. If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

Don't take guilt trips. Go to the mall, the next county, foreign country, but not to guilt country.

Tell the people you love, that you love them, at every opportunity. AND ALWAYS REMEMBER: Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Today, may there be peace within you. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. I believe that friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.

Author Unknown

Step Programs are designed to help drive behavior change with a set of guiding principals outlining a course of action. I was a little surprised, but grateful to see that there is such a Program for Happiness.

You must take the first step. The first steps will take some effort, maybe pain. But after that, everything that has to be done is real-life movement.

Ben Stein

Each step outlined above will help me as I endeavor to reach my goal but I think all of them are needed.  AA's Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions proclaims, The joy of living is the theme of the Twelfth Step, and action is the key word.  I’d say the same is true for the Happiness Program.    Happiness isn’t going to fall in our laps.  It will take some effort on our part as well.  We need to strengthen our happy muscle.

Life is a series of steps. Things are done gradually. Once in a while there is a giant step, but most of the time we are taking small, seemingly insignificant steps on the stairway of life.

Ralph Ransom
