It takes hands to build a house, but only hearts can build a home.

Chapter 4, Page 30, Book 16

The doors we open and close each day decide the lives we live.

Flora Whittemore

April 30th - Make an excellent choice and watch the ripple effect of blessing.

Everything is something you decide to do, and there is nothing you have to do.

Denis Waitley

Big or small? Eat in or carryout? Cream and sugar? These are just a few of the many choices we make on a regular basis. They’re largely insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but they do have an effect on us.

Every choice we make creates a ripple effect on our lives as well as on the lives of others. The choices we have made throughout life determine where we are and what we are becoming.

Choices are also telling. What we really want, love, and think show up in the choices we make.

Our lives are not made by the dreams we dream but by the choices we make. Let’s make excellent ones!

You've got a lot of choices. If getting out of bed in the morning is a chore and you're not smiling on a regular basis, try another choice.

Chapter 4, Page 29, Book 16

Knowing trees, I understand the meaning of patience. Knowing grass, I can appreciate persistence.

Hal Borland

April 29th - The Three P’s – Patience, Persistence, Perseverance

A little more persistence, a little more effort, and what seemed hopeless failure may turn to glorious success.

Elbert Hubbard

Nothing great is ever accomplished without persistence and patience because, in order to be successful, your dreams must translate into work. The people who succeed in life are the people who are willing to do what they don't feel like doing.   You have to do the tough thing instead of the fun thing, the right thing instead of the pleasurable thing.

In these days of bigger, better, faster, more, now, it can be very challenging to practice patience. If it seems that most everyone else around you has forgotten patience or just doesn’t care about it, then that’s a great time to practice it.

In the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins- not through strength but by perseverance.

H. Jackson Brown

There is some profound wisdom to be found in the 3 P’s.

Patience always.

Persistence persistently.

Perseverance incessantly.

We can do anything we want to do if we stick to it long enough.

Chapter 4, Page 28, Book 16

Prayer is the key of the morning and the bolt of the evening.

Mahatma Gandhi

April 28th - Pray more

Sometimes the most important thing in a whole day is the rest we take between two deep breaths, or the turning inwards in prayer for five short minutes.

Etta Hillesum

One way I try to honor people is to keep them in my prayers.   Today I’m putting a new spin on the old adage that says keep your friends close and your not so friendly acquaintances closer. To choose to hold in prayer those we might not have considered keeping in thought and mind.

As we pray for and with others, we are reminded that we are all part of God’s family. Praying is an honor and a joy, and a step toward peace as we bless all those for whom we pray.

We need to remember that it is only love that can overcome hatred, evil and even death.

Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

Matthew 5:44

Praying for your enemy is not optional.  It’s one of the commands we find in scripture.  We pray for our enemies to allow the Lord to heal what is broken.

Going the extra mile to pray for our enemies may seem like a tall order and it is. But God never asks us to do anything without supplying the strength to do it.  If praying for those who persecute you seems too hard, just remember Jesus’ words in Matthew 19:26: With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.

If you pray for another, you will be helped yourself.

Chapter 4, Page 27, Book 16

I believe that a simple and unassuming manner of life is best for everyone, best both for the body and the mind.

Albert Einstein

April 26 - simplicity

It is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all.

Laura Ingalls Wilder

The picture today is of a sign that hangs on my back door and it welcomes any visitors that might stop by.  I found it at a flea market several years ago and you may remember it as I did post a picture at that time.    I do live simply and you won’t find anything grand or luxurious here at my house.  I’ve found that living simply is one of life’s greatest gifts.

Life is filled with simple pleasures, the little satisfying effects you never really anticipate, but always take great pleasure in.  We sometimes forget that the real joy in life is in the simple things, such as being with your loved ones, your family, and friends or just taking a walk in the park.  A clear blue sky and sunny morning will brighten my outlook for the day.  Believe it or not, the simple things in life can give you more joy than you can get from material things.

These little things may not mean much in the scheme of life, but they matter to me, they keep me going through the tough stuff.   The fact is, we really do already have everything we need to be happy and we don’t need anything else.

Have a Great Day….. and remember to smile your day will be brighter!

Simplicity is making the journey of this life with just baggage enough.

Chapter 4, Page 26, Book 16

Be an encourager. The world has plenty of critics already.

 Dave Willis.

April 26th- Be an encourager

Flatter me, and I may not believe you. Criticize me, and I may not like you. Ignore me, and I may not forgive you. Encourage me, and I will not forget you. Love me and I may be forced to love you.

William Arthur Ward

There is something that we all can do which will change people’s lives.  It is very simple.  It won’t cost you a penny.  It will make you feel better.  In fact, it will change your life as well as others.  Be an encourager.

You need to be aware of what others are doing, applaud their efforts, acknowledge their successes, and encourage them in their pursuits. When we all help one another, everybody wins.

Jim Stovall

Our lives, and those of others, mostly walk a tight line, juggling and balancing time, energy, and money. Often when the slightest thing goes wrong people lose their balance. They need encouragement.

To be loved, supported, and encouraged by an encourager is to have your heart refreshed and your attitude lifted

Encouragers are persons that receive great fulfillment from enlarging the lives of others.

Joseph Jason Cotton

Truth be told,  I’m not nearly the encourager that I wish I was, or that I strive to be...but by the end of my life, I hope it can be said that I was an encourager
Encourage someone never know when you'll need it.

Remember: Not all friends are encouragers but all encouragers are friends

I am going your way, so let us go hand in hand. You help me and I'll help you. We shall not be here very long ... so let us help one another while we may.

Chapter 4, Page 25, Book 16

Learn to enjoy every minute of your life. Be happy now. Don't wait for something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future. Think how really precious is the time you have to spend, whether it's at work or with your family. Every minute should be enjoyed and savored.

Earl Nightingale

April 25th - Enjoy every moment of your everyday life - life is too short

Life is a too short enjoy every day with a smile

I think that the first step to enjoying our everyday lives is accepting the lives we’ve been given. We must not allow jealousy or comparison to cause us to discount our own lives because we want someone else’s life.

A Good Day gives you happiness and a Bad Day gives you experience. Both are essential in life.

Both good and bad are part of our lives.  No one is totally exempt.  There are blessings hidden in every struggle you face, but you have to be willing to open your heart and mind to see them.  Life’s best lessons are often learned at the worst times and from the worst mistakes.

Life is short. Fix what can be fixed, let go of what can't and enjoy everyday.

You simply can’t live a positive life with a negative attitude.  Every moment gives you a new beginning and a new ending.  Be thankful to start from where you are now, at this very moment.

Life is what you make of it.

Life is short, time is fast, no replay, no rewind so enjoy every moment you can.

Chapter 4, Page 24, Book 16

There are treasures in life,
but owners are few
Of money and power
to buy things brand new.
Yet you can be wealthy
and feel regal too,
If you will just look
for the treasures in you.
These treasures in life
are not hard to find
When you look in your heart,
your soul, and your mind.

For when you are willing
to share what's within,
Your fervent search
for riches will end.
The joy and the laughter,
the smile that you bring;
The heart unafraid
to love and to sing;
The hand always willing
to help those in need;
Ones quick to reach out,
to labor and feed.
So thank you for sharing
  these great gifts inside;
The caring, the cheering,
the hug when one cried.
Thanks for the energy,
encouragement too,
And thank you for sharing
 the treasures in you.

Author Unknown

April 24th- the heart and the mind work together

Sing to the Lord a new song.

Psalm 98:1

Why should we sing? Because singing engages our hearts as well as our minds.  I read an article that said that in order for  faith to be extraordinary, both our hearts and our minds need to be fully engaged. To just engage our hearts in our faith, as important as that is, isn’t enough. Likewise, to just engage our minds in our faith, as important as that is, also isn’t enough.
Our choice is not one or the other, our hearts or our minds, that we must choose between, as though faith requires disengaging one of them. Instead, our choice is our hearts and our minds  Extraordinary faith then results from a healthy balance of engaging both our hearts and our minds in our faith. When we only engage our hearts in our faith, our faith is lopsided and is not able to endure the hardships in life, because it is not firmly grounded .

I think that by fully engaging both our hearts and minds is the key to most anything we do in life in order to succeed.  We need our hearts and minds working together.  Using both we discover the treasures in life, the things that truly matter.

When it comes to decision making, the two, heart and mind, reason and intuition, can in fact work well together. It just takes a bit of effort and training.

The mind is also responsible for higher thought. It combines sense, thinking, judgement, and memory. It allows you to weigh cost and benefit to make reasoned decisions. When listening to your heart, your inner voice may not always be clear, but it’s trying to tell you something.

It’s necessary for the mind and heart to work together.  The two are not contradictory. You only have to learn to listen to your heart and discover what lies behind it. Think carefully and let your values play a big role in decision making, and do so rationally. Make choices that best serve your values and that prioritize the ones that are most important to you.

Your heart knows things that your mind can't explain.

Chapter 4, Page 23, Book 16

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Herm Albright

April 23rd - Be Positive

Positive minds—minds full of faith and hope—produce positive lives. Negative minds—minds full of fear and doubt—produce negative lives.

Joyce Meyer

Sometimes we start out with the best intentions to think and speak only positive thoughts, but events in our lives or the people around us throw us off course.

The best solution I know of is to acknowledge the things you can’t control and don’t become a victim.  Stop thinking about what is happening to you, and start thinking about what you can do to make it better.  Know that you almost always have a choice.

There is little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. That little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative.

W. Clement Stone

If you expect the worst, the worst will happen.  If you let things bother you, they will. To be able to stay positive it is essential to have influences in your life that support you and lift you up instead of dragging you down.

So carefully consider what you let into your mind.

Few things in the world are more powerful than a positive push. A smile. A world of optimism and hope. A you can do it when things are tough.

Richard M. DeVos

Remember if you smile, you’ll feel better.  Studies have shown that putting a cheerful smile on your face can trigger a part of your brain that actually makes you feel happier and more optimistic about the present and future.

Our lives are not determined by what happens to us but by how we react to what happens, not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events, and outcomes. It is a catalyst, a spark that creates extraordinary results.

Chapter 4, Page 22, Book 16

Let never day nor night unhallowed pass, but still remember what the Lord hath done.

William Shakespear

April 22nd - We must memorize the beautiful deeds God has worked in our lives.

Sooner or later we all discover that the important moments in life are not the advertised ones, not the birthdays, the graduations, the weddings, not the great goals achieved. The real milestones are less prepossessing. They come to the door of memory.

Susan B. Anthony

Our faith is made stronger when we recall all the key moments and signs in which God has been active and present for us.

And it’s these memories that cause us to be very thankful people.  We need to remember that if God has allowed it, then He has a reason for it, and it's ultimately for our good!

When we are thankful, our focus moves off selfish desires and the pain of current circumstances.  Expressing thankfulness helps us remember that God is in control.

Always remember to forget
The things that made you sad.

But never forget to remember
The things that made you glad.

Always remember to forget
The friends that proved untrue.

But don't forget to remember
Those that have stuck by you.

Always remember to forget
The troubles that have passed away.

But never forget to remember
The blessings that come each day.

Author Unknown

Sometimes we can’t seem to see all the good things around us because of the pain that is within us. We will all have pain and problems in this world but thankfulness produces peace in life and passion for life.

In order for of us to know how blessed we are and remember to count our blessings; we must remember God’s faithfulness in our lives.  Thankfulness should be a way of life for us, naturally flowing from our hearts and mouths.

Gratitude is the heart's memory.

Chapter 4, Page 21, Book 16

We are living in a world of beauty, but few of us open our eyes to see it.

Lorado Taft

April 21st - look again

When you change the way you look at things,
the things you look at change.

Dr. Wayne Dyer

There is beauty in everyday, all you have to do is find it. Some say it is hidden like it doesn't want to be seen and yet, that is simply because they refuse to take another look, from another perspective not their own.

Beauty is all around us, yet we never see it. All because we take our surroundings as granted and not as beauty given. Don't take things for granted because you never know how long it will be there.

A thing of beauty is a joy forever; its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness.

John Keats

Taking the time is the key to notice the beauty all around us. Look for something beautiful and positive even if some days you have to look a second look.  Beauty, like love, is all around us. We need to look at how we see ourselves and other people and take another look from the heart!

Beauty you may have with you always, if you will but plant beauty in your heart.

Fred De Witt Van Amburgh

Beauty is all around us. If you take time to look for it, notice and enjoy it you can find beauty every day and everywhere.

Chapter 4, Page 20, Book 16

When your heart speaks, take good notes.

Judith Campbell

April 20th - speaking from the heart

A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

Luke 6:45

What's in our hearts will always influence the way we act. If our hearts are focused on good things, our words and actions will reflect that.  Sometimes the heart speaks words our lips cannot.

Some say their heart speaks in nature, while others say the heart speaks the truth.  I agree with both.  I’ve also heard people say that words they’ve read have spoken to their hearts.

Sometimes words just fly out of my mouth. They just come up from inside me and out the come. It’s then that I find the truth of the matter…I have heart issues. Once you say something, you can’t take it back.  The truth of who we are and what we are comes from our hearts and reveals itself to us through our mouths, and our thoughts.

So many times I think I’ve learned this lesson, but I’ve yet to get it right…

The heart speaks the truth.

Chapter 4, Page 19, Book 16

My first thought in the morning, is thank you for another day.

 Karon Waddell

April 19th - Thankfulness is the soil in which joy thrives.

Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognize how good things really are.

Marianne Williamson

Life is not perfect, and every moment is not filled only with wonderful things. But life changes dramatically, and for the better, when you realize that your circumstances do not determine your experience of life, your attitude does!

We don’t get a chance to hide or pretend when the bottom falls out of our lives.

When we get bad news or a health scare, someone dies, or our finances collapse, all our great words about faith are worthless.  What matters is what we do in those circumstances.

One joyful thought starts a chain reaction, just as a ready smile invites others to smile too.   JOY is a defense against so many of life’s struggles.

We tend to make gratitude and joy conditional events, attaching the word ‘when' to feelings of thankfulness and joy. When everything in life comes together the way we want it to, we rationalize, then we’ll be grateful and joyful.

Too many times, our present or past circumstances subtly shape our attitudes and feelings, and fill our conversations.

Living a life where we give thanks is key to our happiness. Thankfulness lifts us from looking down, up towards the heavens, where our happiness is secured.

When we choose to deliberately focus on what we are thankful for, it changes our outlook in life. There are things to be glad about in every situation, but we have to be looking for them.  That’s what thankful people do, they count their blessings rather than wasting time grumbling and complaining.

Whatever you’re dealing with this week, whatever frustrations come your way… count it as joy!

Chapter 4, Page 18, Book 16

Thought For The Week

Monday, April 18th

The following reflection is a different take on Psalm 23 and puts the emphasis very much on the need to slow down and not to be rushing without reason or purpose.

The Lord Is My Pace Setter

Author Unknown

The Lord is my Pace Setter, I shall not rush. He makes me stop and rest for quiet intervals. He provides me with images of stillness which restore my serenity. He leads me in ways of efficiency through calmness of mind and his guidance is peace. Even though I have a great many things to accomplish each day I will not fret. For his presence is there. His timelessness, his all importance will keep me in balance. He prepares refreshment and renewal in the midst of my activity, by anointing my mind with his oils of tranquility. My cup of joyous energy flows. Surely harmony and effectiveness shall be the fruits of my hours, for I shall walk in the pace of my Lord and dwell in his house forever.

April 18th - no stress

We will always have time enough, if we will but use it aright.

Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

There are many inequities in the world, but one thing we all have in common is the same amount of time each day. God has allotted twenty four hours to each one of us.

It is not uncommon to hear comments like, There just isn’t enough time in a day to do everything I need to do.  I just don’t know where the time goes.  Or I’ll try to find time, but I’m hard pressed for time at the present.  In our day when many people meet themselves coming and going, most people feel pushed for time. The feeling is that there simply aren’t enough hours in a day. Life with all its demands is far too busy.

It is not busier lives that we need. What is needed is a better use of the time we have.  We should not waste the time God has given us,  but must remember too that play, leisure, rest, and simply smelling the roses is a means of making us more effective

The amount of time we spend at something is often not as important as the quality of the time spent. Not only must we consider where our time goes, but how we spend it and why.

No matter what we do or where we are, our days are full and sometimes get hectic, but if we keep the right attitude, every day will be a good day.

Time is...
Too Slow for those who Wait,
Too Swift for those who Fear
Too Long for those who Grieve,
Too Short for those who Rejoice,
But for those who Love
Time is not.

Henry van Dyke

Love, Your Dad
Almighty God

April 17th - We are made by love, we are made of love, and we are made for love..

One thing I know, maybe two is that without a single doubt is that I am loved and what we give returns to us multiplied.

One of our greatest needs as human beings is to be loved. We all need love. We need to know that we are important to somebody, that somebody truly cares about us, wants us, and accepts us unconditionally.

Love involves action. It is expressed in the giving of oneself for the good of another, so it always demands an object. Whenever we talk about love we are suggesting that there is more than one person involved. There must be at least two, the one who loves and the one who is loved.

A good thought for today might be to look for evidences of God’s love for you all throughout the day, and remind yourself and others often that you are the object of His endless love.

Keep hope and love alive.

Chapter 4, Page 16, Book 16

Goodness Knows

Goodness knows that sometimes the greatest thing
in the world is a smile from a child,
So Goodness laughs a lot.

Goodness knows that it's easier to break a child than to mend one,
So Goodness handles with care.

Goodness knows that everyone deserves a second chance,
And sometimes a third and fourth chance, too.

Goodness knows that we all need friends in this world,
So Goodness is determined to be friendly.

Goodness knows that only people count,
So Goodness never counts out people.

Goodness knows that life is sometimes lonely,
But we are never alone.

And when the sorrows of life are left unexplained,
it's still not too much to bear,
For we can trust that Goodness knows.

Author Unknown

April 16th - The good things in life are free

Goodness consists not in the outward things we do, but in the inward things we are. To be good is the great thing

Edwin Hubbell Chapin

They say that whatever you focus on is what you get, so why not focus on the good.  Good people, good food, good places to be, good acts, good news and good words.

When I think about a good life, I try to remember always that the best things in life are free.

That a happy, fulfilling life is a life shared with family and friends.

 What goes around comes around.

Think More, Talk Less. The more you think and the less you talk, the more you will learn and the less you will miss.

Every negative outcome holds a positive lesson.  Finding it is the key to greatness

Goodness is a process of becoming, not of being. What we do over and over again is what we become in the end.

Joan Chittister

Living a good life is the personal fulfillment and joy that comes from being good and doing good.  No matter what circumstances you’re currently going through, you can choose to respond with gratitude and joy. Refuse to allow any circumstances, no matter how difficult, to rob you of the joy of living.  Life is a gift and we need to enjoy it and appreciate what we are given.

This is what God has for each one of us today.

I cannot do all the good that the world needs, but the world needs all the good I can do.

Chapter 4, Page 15, 2016

Today is the only time we can possibly live.

 Dale Carnegie

April 15th - Welcome each day as a gift from God.

The psalmist wrote, This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Ps. 118:24. So often we focus on the disappointments of yesterday or the uncertainties of tomorrow and miss God’s matchless gift to us -Today!

You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment.

 Henry David Thoreau

I can tell you I’m here today, but there are no guarantees that I’ll be here tomorrow.  Life is short.  Celebrate today!

Celebrate the happiness that friends are always giving, make every day a holiday and celebrate just living!

I do know that not everyone has something to celebrate each day, so in my blog, ON the BRIGHT SIDE, I share a holiday for each day of the year.  The link to this blog is on the side bar of this blog.

I say that If you can't see the Bright Side, polish the dull side.  There is always some good in every day.

One cannot change the past, but one can ruin the present by worrying over the future.

I see people all the time that miss the happiness in the day because they are living with regrets of yesterday or who are planning for tomorrow.  What is real and what I try to always do is to focus on is what is happening right now.

Life is a great and wondrous mystery, and the only thing we know that we have for sure is what is right here right now. Don't miss it.
