Chapter 6, Page 30, Book 14

Flatter me, and I may not believe you. Criticize me, and I may not like you. Ignore me, and I may not forgive you. Encourage me, and I may not forget you. Love me and I may be forced to love you

William Arthur Ward

Your smile could be a message of cheer from God to a needy soul.

Optimum health is nourished with nutritious food and drink, plenty of exercise, and time for renewal and rest. Such care and attention feels good in the moment and pays dividends for years to come.

I read about a study that concluded that smiling can be good for your health. Research shows that smiling slows down the heart and reduces stress.

But smiling isn’t just good for you; a genuine smile blesses those on the receiving end as well. Without saying a word, it can tell others that you like them and that you are pleased with them. A smile can hug someone with love without giving them even the slightest touch.

Life does not always give us a reason to smile. But when we see a heartfelt smile on a child’s face or through aged wrinkles, our hearts are encouraged.

We all have the means to bestow on others the most lavish gifts; love, joy, peace, hope, kindness, acceptance, encouragement, laughter, forgiveness, time. There is not enough money to buy them and not too little money to give them. The more you spend, the wealthier you become; yet nothing will cost you more than what you freely possess to give

Chapter 6, Page 29, Book 14

What does summer smell like?

Certain smells are obvious: The sweetness of Coppertone suntan lotion is at once exotic yet altogether familiar and of cut grass just mowed and the smell of chlorine when first diving into the pool, and a charcoal barbecue that always makes me hungry.

It used to be that one of my favorite summer smells was the smell of freshly laundered sheets dried by the sunshine. My sheets still smell good thanks to a lavender scented fabric softener I use, but they are dried by my clothes dryer not by the sun outdoors on a clothesline.  Who would ever think one could possibly miss hanging out clothes on the line, but I do.

Then comes the wonderful smells of our state and county fairs.  Lots of good food there that is not necessarily good for you but delicious to eat.  Things like sausage sandwiches, waffles, and deep fried Oreo cookies.

And, I love the smells of the beach with waves lapping on the shore. Ahhh... nothing smells more invigorating then the sweet scent of the beach!  To me there is nothing better than a trip to the beach.  It’s my favorite place to be.

And of course I’d be lacking if I didn’t mention the smell of the fragrant brew of my good cup of coffee every morning too.  There is nothing quite like it to start off my day.  Summer or winter it is always just right!

Smell is a potent wizard that transports us across thousands of miles and all the years we have lived.

Chapter 6, Page 28, Book 14

Life is what we make it, always has been, always will be

Grandma Moses

The rest of summer, the rest of my life

To count my blessings every day

Count your blessings, everyone of them.  Count  and relish all your big and small blessings

I know from experience that the simple and powerful practice of counting your blessings can change your life. And the good news is that any one can do it.  The more grateful you feel the happier you will feel, and the faster your life will change. When  you Count Your Blessings every day, you will notice a bigger and bigger difference in the way you feel each time, and you will see your blessings magically multiply!

Better to lose count while naming your blessings than to lose your blessings to counting your troubles.

Maltbie D. Babcock

We tend to take so much for granted in our life that it’s amazing how many blessings we have that we are unaware of until we stop to take time to count them. Most people will notice what goes wrong more often than what goes right. Count your blessings…sometimes we forget how many we have. Today is a good day to remember. It’s good to think about why your thankful for something too.

Acknowledging your blessings keeps you from taking things for granted.  It keeps you in a positive frame of mind. Keeps you truly humble in a reverential way and keeps your appreciation muscles flexed. You may want to write this memo in your daily planner:  Make every moment outstanding, Count your blessings!

I’ve pretty much covered all the items on my bucket list now so my thoughts for the days to come will be centering on what ever topic I might find of interest as I meander my way through the web each day or whatever new might be happening at my house.

May your home always be too small to hold all your friends. And may the blessings of each day be the blessings you need most.

When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around.

Chapter 6, Page 27, Book 14

The rest of summer, the rest of my life

To remember what’s most important

I have learned that the greatest life 'are not' things at all

C.W. Fortney

And  sometimes the the best things are not what you expect either.  I don’t know about you, but my life certainly has not turned out the way I expected it to.  Still and all life is good.

It seems in today’s world there are some that are living for things, but the most valuable things in this world are not things.  As you love things you will learn that things cannot return your love.  It’s the people in your life can return your love…not things.

I feel the saddest word in our vocabulary is ‘alone’ and the sweetest word is ‘together’.   You cannot place a value on the kiss of a loved one, the hug of a child, the tenderness of a friend, or the touch of someone being there when needed. Everyone needs a special hug, a kind word, encouragement, and someone to care.

The best things in life are not things.
It’s the people who make you feel loved and cared for

Chapter 6, Page 26, Book 14

Just living is not enough.
One must have sunshine, freedom,
and a little flower.

 Hans Christian Andersen

The rest of summer, the rest of my life

To truly treasure and value each day

In today’s world everyone seems to lead such busy lives and no one can do everything at once. So it’s best take the time to think about your long term values before you make a decision about where to focus your energy.  The most important things in my life are my faith, my family and my friends.   These are the things that I focus on.

Thankfully we only get one day at a time to do what needs be done and when we take life one day at a time by not worrying about the past or the future, we find more time to put what we value in place.

The sunlight that awakens me on a summer morning is bright and encouraging. Its radiance beckons me into a day of unending possibilities and keeping that in mind I remember that each and every day is like a bright summer day in which all things are possible.  Not just summer days, but every day of the year.

Apparently there is nothing that cannot happen today

He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.

Friedrich Nietzsche

The rest of summer, the rest of my life

To be positive and hope for good health

You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you. In that, you will be mastering change rather than allowing it to master you.

Brian Tracey

Getting older isn’t easy and all is not gold in the golden years.  Sometimes my life reminds me of the pesky fly that’s been flying around in my kitchen…every time I get the fly swatter out, it disappears.  I’m going to get that fly one of these days, I am…

Some days are good and some days are even better, but one thing I know, maybe two is that there is something good to be found in every day and every day is good day to have a good day!

As long as I can wake up in the morning and do what needs to be done it is truly a great day here at my house and I have to say I’m really grateful for each one.

There have been no great and colorful sunsets to be had here at my house this week.  It’s been cloudy most evenings so the pictures today are of what I’ve been seeing.

I’ve been sitting out on the porch or patio each evening till the sun sets so as to try and get a picture to share.  The porch is covered, the patio is not, so the weather determines where I’ll be sitting.

Get comfortable with being uncomfortable!

Jillian Michaels

I do try to live a comfortable life.  I’m spoiled by all the creature comforts I do have, but that could change at any moment.  I think we have to realize that life isn’t always going to be good and prepare ourselves for what may come.

Just like having an emergency kit on hand, we need to be prepared for and accept what ever life brings.  There is no use worrying about it or trying to fight it.  It’s not the end of the world if you are a little uncomfortable. And when we dwell on the discomforts we have they only get worse.

I’ve found that laughter is always the best medicine and love works miracles..  A home filled with laughter and love can overcome most anything.  When you are surrounded by happy and loving people you feel comfortable.

May you live all the days of your life

Everyday is my best day; this is my life; I am not going to have this moment again

Bernie Siegel

The rest of summer, the rest of my life...

To live it up until it’s gone...Live Life to the Very Last Minute

There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle

Albert Einstein

The best way I know how to live is to appreciate the life you live, and be grateful for what you have.  Of course we’re going to live until we die but there is good living and bad living and just plain blah living.  I want to live it up!  Enjoy every moment that comes my way.  I stopped wasting my time on things like anger, envy, and gossip.  There are truly so many better ways to spend my time.

It is not the years in your life but the life in your years that counts.

Adlai Stevenson

It’s not the length of my life that I’m trying to improve but the quality of life that I have.

Chapter 6, Page 23, Book 14

I am seeking. I am striving.
I am in it with all my heart.

Vincent van Gogh

The rest of summer, the rest of my life...

To squeeze every ounce of JOY out of my life

Remember, where your treasure is, there your heart is also.

Matthew 6:21
While going through the pictures on my computer the other day I found myself remembering a lot of the good times my family and I have had in the past.  As we make our way on the journey of life, it is easy to forget places, people, and events that have been important to us along the way. Time passes, yesterday fades, and we become obsessed with the concerns of the moment.  Remembrance is more needed when the heartaches of life crowd in on us. When we are feeling overwhelmed and forgotten, it’s important to recall all blessings we have enjoyed and be thankful for them.

When fate hands you a lemon, make lemonade.

Dale Carnegie

But we should never get so tied up with past as we forget to enjoy today.  Today is our opportunity to make a whole lot of new and happy experiences.  I couldn’t quite decide on what pictures to use with this post so I wound up using lemons and lemonade.  Just like squeezing juice out of lemon, we need to squeeze out the joy of each day so we can make the most of it.

Our happiness is certainly mixed in with the tragedies of life. You have to find the lemonade. You have to find the silver lining in the middle of everything that happens in life

Chandra Wilson

Practicing gratitude is one of my favorite instant happiness boosters.  Whenever I get down and out about what’s happening in my life, all I have to do is look back at my list of things I’m thankful for.  My 3 things for today are:

1787. for the color pink, it makes me happy
1788.  for beautiful pink flowers
1789. for a pink shirt and capris to wear today, it’s PINK Day.

I love to keep track of holidays to celebrate.  There are many official and unofficial ones on the calendar.  All of life is a celebration in itself.  We just need to remember that and make the best of it.

Happiness is a tall glass of lemonade on a hot day!

Chapter 6, Page 22, Book 14

Look at everything as though you were seeing it either for the first or last time. Then your time on earth will be filled with glory

Betty Smith

The rest of summer, the rest of my life...

To see everything as if for the first time

Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.

Henry Ford

I’m taking each item on my bucket list, the list of things to do before I kick the bucket or before summer ends,  and sharing a few thoughts for the next few days here on my blog.  Today I’m trying to see everything as if it were for the very first time.  Our eyes are a blessing and too often we take them for granted.  I can remember my mom saying that she always noticed peoples eyes first, I always notice their smiles and sometimes our eyes do smile.

Sometimes the heart sees what is invisible to the eye.

 H. Jackson Brown

Did you know that dozens of diseases that affect the body can be initially diagnosed by an in depth eye examination? Diabetes, sickle-cell anemia, juvenile arthritis, and brain tumors are just a few. Just as our eyes can be windows to our bodies’ health, so too can our eyes be indicators of our spiritual health

When I consider the spiritual health of my own eyes, I think about the things that my eyes focus on and how my heart responds to what I’ve seen. For instance, do I look at beautiful homes and expensive cars with envy? Do I look at homeless people with fear or disgust?

When your life flashes before your eyes, make sure you've got plenty to watch.

Author unknown

I want to take a closer look at everything I see, to pay attention to the things that really matter in life.  Life is all about prioritizing the things that matter most in your life and focusing your efforts in these areas. Today I’m going to concentrate on the beauty of God’s design.  Beautiful clouds and sunsets inspire praise for the Creator who forms them right outside my door.

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

Ecclesiastics 3:11

You just can’t observe nature and God’s design and not find yourself changed with the perspective they give you.  After almost losing my rose bush due to our harsh winter, it now has buds forming once again.  It’s resilience  reminds me to hang in there and  to bloom where I am planted.  I want to  breathe the fresh air, bask in the warmth of the sun, and enjoy the beauty of this day.

Life is a leisurely walk you take each day seeing all the wonder and beauty around you. Life isn't some tightrope balancing act where you must be perfect or lose everything. Life is a joyful stroll down some old railroad tracks where if you fall off you just smile, laugh and jump right back on. Life isn't some worrisome counting of every penny you make. Life is smelling flowers, smiling at sunrises, playing with laughing children, and collecting priceless memories. Life isn't what happens to you. Life is rather the many wonderful choices that you make all through the day and all through your life.

Chapter 6, Page 21, Book 14

Sunset last night - the Eve of Summer

Today is the first day of the rest of your summer….

Finally summer is officially here.  I know for some it has already seemed like summer for quite a while.  The days ahead will be busy and relaxing at the same time.  I for one relish the long hours of daylight and warmth.  Every day has 24 hours but summer days seem longer than most.

In another completely different way summer does seem short and speeds by like a flash of lightning.  I try to savor summer days.  They keep me going throughout our long long winters here.  Now that summer is officially here I’m switching my theme for next few weeks to what I might want to do with the rest of my summer and my life…

We are only guaranteed  that we have today, but if we are blessed to have another tomorrow, it’s not a bad thing to think about what we want to do tomorrow.  As I’ve gotten older I find there is not much new that I truly aspire to do in the future.  I’ve led a good life and have done many things and am happy to be in the place and time I am right now.  Life as I’ve known it is changing.  I’ve changed.  So maybe it’s time I developed a new Bucket List.

I’ve been struck by words from Psalm 90:10 & 12. Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures… for they quickly pass, and we fly away… Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.  We don’t any of us know what tomorrow will bring, but life goes on with our without us.  When you turn 70, you can't consider yourself middle aged any more. Let's face it, my body might be old, but I still think young.

One thing I’ve promised myself is that I’ll watch the sunset every evening of this summer.  It’s a reminder to me how thankful I am for summer days. So get ready to see my somewhat blemished view of the sunset here everyday.  I live in the middle of a block with trees and houses all around so it’s not like what some of you may see.  We had a lot of rain yesterday and it was pretty cloudy, still you can see the red in the sky.

My bucket list for the rest summer and the rest of my life…

To see everything as if for the first time

To squeeze every ounce of JOY out of my life

To live it up until it’s gone...Live Life to the Very Last Minute

To be positive and hope for good health

To truly treasure and value each day

To remember what’s most important

To count my blessings every day

I’ll be sharing more thoughts on this list in the days to come.

Happy Summer everyone!

Chapter 6, Page 20, Book 14

Summertime and the livin’ is easy…

Summer is short; use it or lose it

Each of the seasons have their positive qualities, but for me, none of them are even halfway as good as summer. Sunny skies and rising temperatures do more than make our environment a pleasant place. They also provide some very significant benefits to our health and well being.  The summer sunshine helps to regulate our bodies, as well as giving a boost to our lifestyle.

Did you know that the lazy, hazy days of summer are good for your heart.    A diet that’s rich in fruits and vegetables, which I tend to eat more of in summer when they are fresh, is great for healthy summer snacks and is usually lower in calories and higher in nutrients, And that’s better for the heart.

Whether you’re chasing after your kids at the park or doing outdoor exercises like swimming, biking, walking, or organized sports, exercise makes your heart happier than when you stay indoors during the winter chill.  Getting outdoors and exercising or just being active will help burn some energy that will then result in a better night’s sleep once you are back home too.

Life is short. Summer is shorter.

Summer is an invitation slow down.  To change pace.  To take our time.  To heal our bodies, our minds and our souls.

Ah, summer, what power you have to make us suffer and like it.

Chapter 6, Page 19, Book 14

Summertime and the livin’ is easy…

More tips to be aware of this summer!

Drink more.  Push those fluids!  Sounds simple, but heat and dehydration result in many a trip to the emergency room.  When it heats up outside we are more susceptible to temperature changes coupled with a reduced ability to conserve water. This combination can be disastrous!

Apply sunscreen liberally!  Stay in shade when possible and wear protective clothing!

Eat a healthy diet!  When it is hot, sometimes the tendency is not to eat.  But healthy eating helps maintain the sense of well being, plus it aids in hydration.

Avoid bug bites!  The best way to avoid complications from insect bites is to not get bitten!  Using insect repellents and wearing long sleeved shirts and pants goes along way in preventing bites.

Be extra careful when driving!  Summer is the season when most car accidents occur for many reasons.  Summer vacations, schools not in sessions and road construction to name just a few.

With a little common sense and some extra TLC, everyone can safely get out and enjoy these summer days ahead.

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think. Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink. The years go by, as quickly as you wink. Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself…

Chapter 6, Page 18, Book 14

Don’t ever confuse the two, your life and your work. That’s what I have to say. The second is only a part of the first.

Anna Quindlen

Summertime and the livin’ is easy…
Some New Money Saving tips over the Summer.  Well maybe some new ones but others are tried and true.

When summer hits, most people think of lazy days by the pool, family vacations, and enjoying late summer nights with friends.

Don’t forget to enjoy some of the free activities that are available.  A fun summer doesn’t require expensive resorts or amusement parks.  Explore nearby nature trails, parks, lakes, beaches and community pools.  As they say, often the best things in life are free.

If you’re going to be out of the house for a good portion of the day, why run the air conditioning at full-speed?  By turning the power down and the temperature up, you can really save money each month on your electric bill

We often forgot about the vast array of local events and attractions that we pay for out of our taxes every year. Many towns, whether big or small, host many different summer events for the entire family. Local museums, libraries, and parks all have big things going on during the summer.

It is almost always more healthy and less expensive to make a meal yourself than to eat out. Instead of going out, bring your lunch if you’re going on a road trip or to an event, pack a cooler to take with you.  If you’re staying at a hotel, make sure to book a room with a microwave and a fridge. That way you can bring your own food and avoid the cost of eating out.

Summer is for fun but one should not try to overdo it by spending on unnecessary items and services.

In even the smallest, most ordinary things there is amazing beauty and immense potential for joy. If you are bored or uninspired, you’re simply not paying attention.

Chapter 6, Page 17, Book 14

I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.

E.B. White

Summertime and the livin’ is easy…

3 Tips to Work Less and Enjoy Life More

My perfect summer day would be spent out in the country enjoying a picnic with family and friends.  Somehow that doesn’t happen very often, but I know from experience that if I want the time to do things like this,  I have to plan ahead.

Tip #1: Always try to plan ahead.  I know that we all can make plans and those plans can change in an instant, but sometimes they do work out even though they were not quite what we expected.  Don’t wait. The key is to get out a calendar and schedule the things you really want to do.

Tip #2:  Relax more.  Consider setting aside one day a week to take a walk alone, just to relax and fill yourself up in another way. What could be more fun than true relaxation?

Tip #3:  Keep positive.  Your positive attitude will create a relaxed, happy mood in your house

The best things in life are free: This couldn’t be truer than when spending quality time with our loves ones. So get out and enjoy everything nature has to offer. The grass is greener, the days are longer, and the weather is warmer. The pressure is on! We need to hurry and make the most out of summer before the winter coats come back out.

Every morning is a fresh beginning. Every day is the world made new. Today is a new day. Today is my world made new. I have lived all my life up to this moment, to come to this day. This moment--this day--is as good as any moment in all eternity. I shall make of this day--each moment of this day--a heaven on earth. This is my day of opportunity.

Chapter 6, Page 16, 2014

Your imagination is your preview of life's coming attractions.

Albert Einstein

Summertime and the livin’ is easy…

The power of imagination is an amazing gift from God.

Summer: the season for cracking open a good book under the shade of a tree. ... Just fall into these pages and let your imagination do the rest. …

Your imagination may be the best gift of all. It's the source of your creative power. If there's a particular experience or object you want to bring into your life, the first thing you've got to do is visualize it. The practical actions you take to make your dreams always refer back to the pictures in your mind's eye. And so every goal you fulfill, begins as an inner vision. Your imagination is the catalyst with which you design your future.

You can't depend on your judgment when your imagination is out of focus.

Mark Twain

When imagination and excitement are mixed together, you will either not notice obstacles or they will be largely diminished and, therefore, your courage will increase! By using your imagination, it can make your day much more exciting and interesting.

I often use my imagination and take a trip to the beach in my mind.  The beach is my favorite place to be and if I’m having a bad day,  I just close my eyes for a moment and take an imaginary trip to the beach.  It’s a way for me to relax.  I also love to read and believe me when I say there are a lot of books about beaches out there.  I’ve read a lot of them.  A book will take you places that you’d never dream possible.

I actually got to go to the beach yesterday with my youngest son and his family and pictures today are of that trip.   Our beach is right on the shores of Lake Erie.

Imagination is our ability
to see inwardly and picture
there that which has not
yet appeared outwardly.
Imagination is God's gift
to us.

Chapter 6, Page 15, Book 14

Remembering Dad on Fathers Day…

What Is A Father?

A father is a person who is forced to endure childbirth without an anesthetic. He growls when he feels good and laughs very loud when he is scared half to death.

A father never feels entirely worthy of the worship in a child's eyes. He is never quite the hero his daughter thinks. Never quite the man his son believes him to be. And this worries him sometimes. So he works too hard to try to smooth the rough places in the road of those of his own who will follow him.

A father is a person who goes to war sometimes... and would run the other way except that war is part of an important job in his life which is making the world better for his children than it has been for him.

Fathers grow older faster than other people, because they, in other wars, have to stand at the airport and wave goodbye to the uniform that climbs on board the plane.

And, while mothers cry where it shows, fathers stand and beam... outside... as they endure the pain inside.

Fathers are men who give daughters away to other men who aren't nearly good enough, so that they can have children that are smarter than anybody's.

Fathers fight dragons almost daily. They hurry away from the breakfast table off to the arena, which is sometimes called an office or a workshop. There they tackle the dragon with three heads: Weariness, Works, and Monotony. And they never quite win the fight, but they never give up.

Knights in shining armor; fathers in shiny trousers. There's little difference as they march away each workday.

And when a Father passes away, and after a good rest, he won't just sit on a cloud and wait for the girl he's loved and the children she bore. He'll be busy there too... repairing the stars, oiling the gates, and in general helping smooth the way for others.

Dads are...

A dad is someone who wants to catch you before you fall but
instead picks you up, brushes you off, and lets you try again.

A dad is someone who wants to keep you from making mistakes
but instead lets you find your own way, even though his
heart breaks in silence when you get hurt.

A dad is someone who holds you when you cry, scolds you
when you break the rules, shines with pride when you succeed,
and has faith in you even when you fail.

Chapter 6, Page 14, Book 14

What do I want to take home from my summer vacation?  Time.
The wonderful luxury of being at rest.  The days
when you shut down the mental machinery that keeps life
on track and let life simply wander.  The days when you
stop planning, analyzing, thinking and just are.
Summer is my period of grace.

Ellen Goodman

Summertime and the livin’ is easy…

A state of mind…

Summer is a natural phenomenon, yet it is also a state of mind: The world is again full of possibilities, joys and pleasures.  Slowing down, being lazy, is more of a state of mind…a way to refuel and take some time to just go where the wind blows and unclog our minds from the months of road dust that our more hurried lives had deposited.  I think most of us look forward to summer.  And for me after surviving the worst winter ever means we'll have the best summer ever.

The heat and the humidity that summer often brings gives us a healthy excuse to slow down for a spell.  Since I now live life in the slow lane, I can tell you from experience it is a wonderful place to be.

In the slow lane you see everything with a greater perspective.   Leading a slow life means having the capacity to live and work with focus, ease, and a sense of direction, while still achieving your goals.  When you choose a pace of life rather than having life choose it for you, you are able to live more fully in the present.

If you’re waiting for the perfect opportunity, wait no longer. This day is the best opportunity you’ve ever had, because it is when you can take action and move forward.

Ralph Marston
