Exercise in Control
A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered. Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.
Self control of the mind
One great need of self-control of the mind is the television
Is it possible that what’s going on on TV has desensitized parents to what is acceptable and what is not???
TV viewing can contribute to our being in a snare
My eyes are ever on the Lord, for he will free my feet from the snare
If the deeds of faithless men are set before our eyes, those deeds can cling to us
I will not set before my eyes any base thing. I hate him who does perversely, he shall not remain with me.
Psalm 119: 37
Turn away my eyes from seeing what is vain, by your way give me life
Romans 12:2 tells us not to be conformed to this age but to be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may decern what is the will of God.And in 2Corinthians 10:5 We read…take every thought captive in obedience to Christ.
The self control of the mouth.
There are two functions of the mouth. Taste and speech -- What we put into our mouths and what comes out of our mouths
1 Corinthians 6:12 says…I will not let myself be dominated by anything.
Many Americans are dominated either by thier obesity or by being bone thin. Both are mastered by what they eat.
Craving food seems to be an acceptable Christian addiction. It’s acceptability does not mean that it has benefits.
Equally devastating is the avoidance of food. It is not God’s will that we be mastered by anything other than Him.
Crash diets and starvation are not acceptable ways to show glory to God either.
If we look at eating what is good for us as a way to glorify God, then we have freedom. If you are mastered by food, then you need God’s help in fortifying your walls. Seek HIM , he has a plan for you.
Controlling that which exits the mouth
James 3: 1-12 says if anyone does not fall short in speech, he is a perfect man, able to bridal (control) his whole body…as a ship is steered by a small rudder likewise it is the same with the tongue a small member but has great pretensions
…from the same mouth comes blessings and cursings.
Ephesians 4:29 sets a standard for words we say to others
No foul language should come out of your mouths but only such as is good for needed edification, that it may impart grace to those that hear.
1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 tells us to aspire to live a tranquil life and to mind your own affairs
We need to mind our own business !
Peters words can help us to make choices in favor of self-control
2 Peter 1: 3-11
His divine power has bestowed on us everything that makes for life and devotion though the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and power…
Make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge, knowledge with self – control, self-control with endurance, endurance with devotion, devotion with mutual affection, mutual affection with love.
If these are yours…they will keep you from being idle or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We have been given knowledge. It is our choice to add self control. It’s the only way to godliness.
This whole lesson on self-control has been a difficult one for me. I really don’t think I use enough control at all. It’s a good thing the Lord is patient with me. I have many walls to build to fortify my temple.
2 Peter 3:1-11
In the last days scoffers will live according to their own desires. They ignore the fact that the heavens exist…But do not ignore this my beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day. The Lord does not delay His promise as some regard ‘delay’ , but He is patient with you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and the heavens will pass away with a mighty roar and the elements will be dissolved by fire and the earth and evething done on it will be found out.
Since everything will be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be, conducting yourselves in holiness and devotion…
Tomorrow will be the last day of this study of the fruits of the Spirit and we will take a look at Victorious Living .
