The Bread of Life

1 Samuel 21

Verse 6

The priest gave him the consecrated bread, since there was no bread there except the bread of the Presence that had been removed from before the Lord and replaced by hot bread on the day it was taken away

Saul had alerted the country to be on the outlook for David. He was on the run. David faced a terrifying prospect for a person ….he was on the run for his life.

The only bread they could find for David was the bread of the Presence

In Leviticus 24:5-9 we see the regulation concerning the bread. …it was set out as a lasting Covenant on behalf of the Israelites

God might have wanted David to have the bread of the Presence symbolizing the everlasting Covenant of God with David.

Or the bread of the Presence might have symbolized the Presence of God in the life of David. The everlasting Covenant symbolized by the Bread of the Presence was a reminder of God’s promise to His people

God reminded David of His presence and His power

Jesus combines the bread with everlasting life. Christ is the bread of God’s presence to us.

Those who have eaten the bread of His Presence have the same everlasting covenant He made with David.

Then in search of refuge, David fled to Achish the king of Gath, he then encountered the Philistines and pretended to be a mad man. Not only was he a harpist and a warrior, now he was an actor.

In the chapters ahead we will see David negotiating some tough times.

Like David, God doesn’t want us feeding on ordinary bread, but on the bread of the Presence.. His table is always set and ready for us.
