The Hope of Lent

When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.

Alexander Graham Bell

March 28th - Not everyone who has the gift of sight can truly see

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

John Lubbock

Playing games with a blindfold helps us appreciate the gift of sight. Sight is a double blessing in a time when media manipulates visual contents, its patterns, and its timing. A quickly edited, fast moving commercial on television proves the point; your eyes quickly read the message.

Throw away catalogs and advertisements that inevitably promise you more fulfillment and joy in life. Those things are not sold in stores. Never have been, never will be.

Sometimes a person can look, but not see.  Sometimes it is difficult to see the sun over the clouds. But the sun is always there.

We don’t always see things in the same way.  We don’t always agree.  Many things look differently to different people.

Lent is a time to open our eyes and our hearts. It’s a time to see things as they are and not to blind ourselves to the truth.  To see each person as he or she is, a life worthy of respect, reverence and, and love.  To open our eyes to the truth that we are desperately dependent upon God for our very existence.

It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see.

The Hope of Lent

Give up gloom——enjoy the beauty that is all around you.

March 27th - Tomorrow is not yet; yesterday is gone; now is all you have

Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything that is beautiful, for beauty is God's handwriting -- a wayside sacrament.  Welcome it in every fair face, in every fair sky, in every flower, and thank God for it as a cup of blessing.

 Ralph Waldo Emerson

This world is full of beauty, but the most beautiful things are those simple things that teach us profound lessons.

Beauty is not always realized through a life changing moment or a great epiphany. It’s not always hidden in a rainbow. Beauty is often found through looking into a newborn’s eyes, in the blooming of a flower, or in paint peeling off an old fence. It’s often where you least expect it.

Shadows always seem to get a bad rap, but they are a beautiful thing on a hot summer day. They shield us from the heat. They remind us that there truly is opposition in all things.  Even darkness has a place and a potential to do good. No one is ever completely lost.

To some, rain may seem gloomy, but if we look at rain through different eyes, it becomes a cool drink for the earth that brings growth to every living thing it touches. It is rain that makes the earth so vibrant and full of color. It is the rain that we rely upon for our own well being.

Looks like a day to make my own sunshine here.

The Hope of Lent

Give up complaining——focus on gratitude.

March 26th - Sunday gratitude

Gratitude means thankfulness, counting your blessings, noticing simple pleasures, and acknowledging everything that you receive. It means learning to live your life as if everything were a miracle, and being aware on a continuous basis of how much you’ve been given.

When we are thankful, grateful and appreciative of what we have, we tend to be more generous, loving, patient and kind toward others. Gratitude helps you focus on what is important instead of getting caught up in the little annoyances of everyday life.

This Sunday I’m especially grateful for a day of rest.  After weeks of packing and preparing to move, I’m finally in my new home.  The move was completed last weekend with the help of family and friends.

There is still a lot to unpack, but today is a day just to relax rest and enjoy.  Gone are the days of constant busyness and work.  Life in the slow lane has resumed.  That’s where I work a little and rest a lot.

Thank the good Lord for His many blessings!

The Hope of Lent

Give up negativism——be positive.

March 25th

Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.

Lou Holtz

Most of us tend to let our circumstances choose our attitude for us.  But choosing our attitude no matter what the circumstances is the only way to a happier life.  Why wait for the perfect circumstance to be happy, when we can choose it now, every day, no matter what happens.

A great attitude does much more than turn on the lights in our worlds; it seems to magically connect us to all sorts of serendipitous opportunities that were somehow absent before the change.

Earl Nightingale

Attitude is a decision that we make every day.  It’s ours to choose just how we want to feel.  Even if, at any given time, your choices of action are limited, your choices regarding your attitude are not. Always choose a positive attitude.

A happy person is not a person in a certain set of circumstances, but rather a person with a certain set of attitudes.

Hugh Downs

How we choose to start a new day can be our single most effective way to impact having a good day. The way we choose to see things and respond to others makes all the difference. A positive attitude is always an option and it's up to each and everyone of us to choose it.

Choosing to be positive and having a grateful attitude is going to determine how you're going to live your life.

Joel Osteen

Positivity is choosing to see the bright side of life. It is recognizing that struggle and pain are not all that’s there, even if they’re all we can see in a certain moment. It is seeing the good in people, even when we have to search really, really hard for it.

We choose what attitudes we have right now. And it's a continuing choice.

The Hope of Lent - March 24th

The grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.

Allan K. Chalmers

Whatever would we do without those grand essentials?  Without something to do, we’d have no cause to get up in the morning, Without something to love, we’d have no cause to get up in the morning.  Without something to hope for, we’d have no cause to get up in the morning.

Thankfully I do have every reason to wake up, get up and enjoy each day! It’s a very powerful thing to know that you have a purpose in life with something to do every day, to do the things you love and to be  hopeful even when things aren’t going so well.

Waking up this morning, I smile. Twenty-four brand new hours are before me. I vow to live fully in each
moment.

Thích Nhất Hạnh

Let me tell you a secret, it is impossible on our own. Every good thing comes to us from heaven above.  When you know who you are and you know who walks with you, you have everything!

I’ve learned that no matter how good or bad things are, you must wake up each day and be thankful for  your life, because someone somewhere else is desperately fighting for theirs.

I’ve had my share of struggles, as we’ve all had. But I choose to push forward. I choose to restart. I choose to smile, even on the days that I don’t want to. Every day we have a choice to begin again or let our yesterdays define us. Every day we have an option to carry our past weight or let it go. And every day we have the potential to stay as what we were, or become something new.  And we are all capable of fresh, of different, of more.

The moment when you first wake up in the morning is the most wonderful of the twenty four hours. No matter how weary or dreary you may feel, you possess the certainty that, during the day that lies before you, absolutely anything may happen. And the fact that it practically always doesn’t, matters not a jot. The possibility is always there.

The Hope of Lent - March 23rd

There is no medicine like hope, no incentives so great, and no tonics so powerful as the expectation of something better tomorrow.

Orison Swett Marden

Life is a journey. Everything in it is a process. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end. All aspects of life are always developing. Life is motion. Without movement, advancement, and progression, there is no life. In other words, as long as you and I are alive, we are always going to be going somewhere.

They say that if you have not been enjoying the journey of your life, it is time to start. If you have been enjoying your life, then thank God and look for ways to enjoy it even more.

Thankfully, our enjoyment in life is not based on always having enjoyable circumstances. It is an attitude of the heart.  Lent is an invitation toward whole heartedness.  The heart is an ancient metaphor for the seat of our whole being. To be whole hearted means to bring our entire selves before
God, our intellect, our emotional life, our dreams and intuitions, our deepest longings.

Lent a time of renewal, conversion of heart.

Keep your head and your heart going in the right direction and you will not have to worry about your feet.

The Hope of Lent

There are no hopeless situations, only people who think hopelessly.

Windred Newman

March 22th -  Lent offers new growth and life we hope for

I saw the check list below the other day and I thought what a great way to base my new beginnings on

start spending time with the right people
start making happiness a daily priority
let go of self limiting behaviors
 make life simple again

We need to remember that no one is perfect. This might seem like the most obvious statement in the world, but it's important to remember. We live in a time when people's thoughts and actions are more widely recorded and open to scrutiny than ever before. A small mistake can cost someone their reputation or livelihood. An opinion expressed, particularly online, can invite a world of insults. It appears to be easier than ever to take the moral high ground, and to dismiss a person entirely based on one thing we know about them.

However, the Lenten lesson for today is that it’s best to see beyond the labels placed on people and treat each other the way we would want to be treated.  Everyone deserves another chance and a new beginning. Remember none of us is perfect.

The Hope of Lent - March 20th

I once was lost, but now am found…

Amazing Grace

Lost keys, lost eyeglasses, lost papers. Finding these things brings a moment’s relief. Lost direction, lost passion, lost relationship. Finding these things is a lifelong task. We lose, we find, we lose again. Lent offers us a time to slow down and think about what we value most…those things we never want to lose.

As hard as I have tried, with all the goings on here at my house the past few months, I’ve found myself losing sight of what matters to me at times.  And beginning over is a great time to reset priorities.

Always, always, the important things in my life are family friends and my faith. Along with those things,  we need include how we spend our time, our happiness and behaviors.  A simple life with simple pleasures.

Gone now are the hectic days and more than ever before I find comfort in the quieter simpler life.  Chaos and drama have been removed and replaced by calm and peacefulness.

Though you lose all hope, there is still hope, and it loves to surprise.

The Hope of Lent - March 15th

We judge of man's wisdom by his hope.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

The sincere soul falls as a traveller may do, by stumbling at some stone in his path; but gets up, and goes on his way with more care and speed.  When we feel stuck in a pattern or situation, wisdom always gives hope that it can change.

This Lent has taken on a different perspective for me with the house being sold and moving.  A whole new way of life is opening up and I’m learning a lot of new things.   More than ever before I’ve learned never to give up and to keep hope alive.

My days are still very busy so if you don't see a post from me everyday, just know I'm ok, but things are a little hectic here.

Know that wisdom is thus for your soul; If you find it, then there will be a future, And your hope will not be cut off.

Gratitude is the fairest blossom which springs from the soul.

Henry Ward Beecher

I’m very grateful today that for the most part I’m moved into my new home.  My family and friends really pulled together and with a lot of hard work got it done.  They say that starting this afternoon though Wednesday, we’re to have some snow, not sure just how much as it depends on which way the wind blows.  We’re really lucked out so far this winter, but this could be the storm that hits us???

The picture above is part of my moving crew. Different people came on Saturday and Sunday so I don’t have a picture of all of them.  They are all the best ! Of course some of the grandchildren were there at times to cheer us on.

Daylight Savings Time came without much trouble.  We were all too tired out to know the difference. It’ll be awhile before I catch up on my sleep.

Today I’ve a day to unpack and put some things away.  There are still a few things at the old house so perhaps tomorrow I'll get there to finish up.  We’ll see how the wind blows….

For today and its blessings, I owe the world an attitude of gratitude.

7.  You can pass it around and no one will get mad
6.  I want you to wonder what I’m thinking
5.  It’s a precious gift
4.  It’s with this or one of those stupid dancing emails
3.  Mom was right - your face can freeze like that
2.  Good way to show off dimples

and the #1 reason you Deserve a Smile…

You’ll Smile Back!

March 6th - Never forget to smile, even when life is hard

A smile is nature's best antidote for discouragement.
It brings rest to the weary,
Sunshine to those who are frowning,
And hope to those who are hopeless and defeated.
A smile is so valuable that it can't be bought,
Begged, borrowed, or taken away against your will.
You have to be willing to give a smile away
Before it can do anyone else any good.
So if someone is too tired or grumpy to flash you a smile,
Let him have one of yours anyway.
Nobody needs a smile as much
As the person who has none to give.

Dale Carnegie

There is great power in giving a smile to someone else. First, when you give a smile, you are acknowledging the other person as someone special. This does not matter that you even know them or will ever know them.

Giving a smile is a great gift in that it only requires a brief second of your time, attention, and ability to connect with another person. No money is required. A smile gives hope and encouragement.  It’s a frown turned upside down.

When life gives us reasons to cry
We give it reasons to smile

I hope you all find many reasons to smile today!

The Hope of Lent

Hope...is the companion of power, and the mother of success; for who so hopes has within him the gift of miracles.

Samuel Smiles

March 5th - a whisper of hope, a measure of faith

Life is a miracle don't let it slip away,
Open your heart to others, give of yourself each day.
See the beauty in everyone, regardless of where they've been,
Some have a difficult journey and really need a friend.

Share your gifts and talents, listen with your heart.
Do the things you dream about but don't have time to start.

Pick a bouquet of flowers, show someone that you care,
Be gracious and forgiving, for life is never fair.

Hold on to your courage, you may need it down the road,
We all have a cross to bear, it could be a heavy load.

If you practice all these things, wherever you may roam,
You might find both sun and rain, but you'll never feel alone!

In order to see a miracle, we need look no further than our own hands. Just our being here right now is proof of that.  Every day of our life is a miracle, every moment is a miracle.  It is a gift that has no price.

The Hope of Lent - March 4th

If you watch how nature deals with adversity, by continually renewing itself, you can't help but learn.

Bernie Siegel

Plants will grow wherever they can find a small crack of sunlight, a glimmer of hope.  They are a symbol for resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Nothing says hope quite like flowers growing through the cracks in concrete.

When you feel stuck in a winter season in life, hold on to the hope of new change to come . Nature’s beauty can be healing and revealing of something bigger than you and I.

For me, spring is synonymous with hope, resilience and savoring life. Where seeds and bulbs that lay hidden and invisible in the ground suddenly make show off their existence as jonquils, daffodils, hyacinths!  I draw strength and have renewed purpose as I am reminded of the Resurrection, of new life, new beginnings and hope.

I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station, through which God speaks to us every hour, if we will only tune in.

Give up gloom——enjoy the beauty that is all around you.

The Hope of Lent

Hope is a good thing--maybe the best thing, and no good thing ever dies.

Stephen King

March 3rd - a blossoming time of hope

Where flowers bloom so does hope.

Lady Bird Johnson

Lent has been around for many years, however it is not an outdated, old fashioned and out of touch event but one that is more relevant and important than it ever was.

We have seen what happens to those who lose hope. Too often when hope is lost, many of those backed up to the edge of the cliff end up jumping right over it.

Flowers blossom with the exuberance of hope and new beginning, just as Hope blossoms where there was only darkness and shadows.  Where there is hope, there is love, and where there is love, there is God and where there is God, there is no need.

Hope is the seed planted in the heart that springs forth from the soul and blossoms into radiant beauty in the voice, attitude, and in our lifestyles.  They say that this time of year, hope springs eternal.

Hope keeps us going no matter the challenges of the day, dusk tiptoes in; the curtain of night descends. We take rest while God stays up watching over all. Morning dawns and we are given a fresh opportunity to get back in harmony. Hope is renewed! Evening comes and morning follows. Day by day.

A flower cannot blossom without sunshine, and man cannot live without love.

March 2nd- pray more, worry less

Sorrow looks back, Worry looks around, Faith looks up

Ralph Waldo Emerson

There are four keys to LENT

Let Go
Enter IN
Never give up
Time Out

Rather than being the one in control, we need to Let go and see where our Journey of Hope takes us in the days ahead.

We Enter by being attentive and aware of what each new day brings.  Opening our hearts to see the opportunities in each one.

Never giving up means that we persevere even if we fall down six time we can rise up seven.  If we have a bad day, we can always start again.  Never give up, trust God.

In the busy days ahead we need to take Time Out to pray and prayer time is never wasted.

In many ways prayer is hope.  Without it you have nothing and with it you have so many possibilities.

We pray that Lent will be a journey that will point us to new beginnings and the courage to let go of what needs to be let go of.

May these four keys to L E N T help us renew our hope.

Hope is a renewable option: If you run out of it at the end of the day, you get to start over in the morning.

Sarah Ban Breathnach

There’s something about the season of Lent that draws us in, calls us to return to sanity, to a bit of austerity, to a change of heart and mind.

Ash Wednesday, is a time in which we are called afresh to look at the reality of the way we live our lives and to reflect that which lies deeply within ourselves, to search deeply within our minds and hearts and to look at our own hopes for our own lives and for our world.  It's a day to celebrate the gift of now and the gift of today.  Life may be busy and hectic, but Lent reminds us that we can step back from all the busyness and reflect on our own lives

In the weeks proceeding Easter I’ll try to explore Hope and share what I find with you all.  Hope is unpredictable, Hope blossoms, Hope does not disappoint, and Hope is like a light that shines before us.

Lent is a time of true change and high hopes.
