Chapter 9, Page 30, Book 17

The good times of today, are the sad thoughts of tomorrow.

Bob Marley

Holding Joy and Sorrow in each hand

Appreciate and remember the good times. Forgive and forget the bad.

Author Unknown

Sorrow and joy are two sides of the same coin. One cannot exist with out the other.  Joy doesn't deny sorrow or loss, it exists alongside it and opens our hearts so we can bear all that life is.

Joy is a gift. It comes to us unbidden at times, surprising us in ordinary quiet moments more often than the big stupendous times.  It is something we don’t earn. It is a grace we receive for being simply being alive. Like any gift it is best received with a grateful heart.

Sorrow and scarlet leaf,
Sad thoughts and sunny weather.
Ah me, this glory and this grief
Agree not well together!

Thomas Parsons

I for one would rather have a raft full of joyful memories stored in my heart and  mind  when sorrow comes. They’ll be there to remind me of what I’ve known,  and give me strength.

Life is like a roller coaster ride with highs of happiness and lows of sorrow and sadness infringing into our felicity from time to time. There is a tendency for people to slip away into sorrow, which sadly isn’t a happy feeling. The feeling of sorrow can leave you battling with the worse feeling of acute sadness, worthlessness and loneliness.Take heart in the fact that sorrow is a passing phase and the clouds of sadness will blow away and you will be happy again.

Good times are a reminder and a reward for dealing with the difficult and challenging times we all go through. The trick is to celebrate the good times in advance of the difficult times. Always remember, good times await you after the difficult times pass .

Chapter 9, Page 29, Book 17

It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.

Antoine de Saint-Exupery

the answers we seek so desperately have actually been right in front of us all along

The common eye sees only the outside of things, and judges by that, but the seeing eye pierces through and reads the heart and the soul, finding there capacities which the outside didn't indicate or promise, and which the other kind couldn't detect.
 Mark Twain

We search for comfort, security, and fulfillment outside of ourselves, we feel lost when people don’t fit the molds we put them in or we don’t obtain the dream job we were so certain was meant for us.  But when we make the choice to start seeing with the heart rather than our eyes, we find the good that was there all along.  For when the heart is clear, our eyes are too.

Sometimes we just have to think with the heart.

Same old eyes, same old world but the difference is how you look at what is in front of you, not what it is.

Chapter 9, Page 28, Book 17

Values provide perspective in the best of times and worst.

Charles A. Garfield

It is Well with My Soul!

One we discover how to appreciate the timeless values in our daily experiences, we can enjoy the best things in life.

Harry Hepner

I think that having clear standards and values to which you are committed makes getting through life much easier. With a foundation like this, you never second guess yourself. You always know you’re doing what you believe in and what is best for you.

If a soul is broken or malfunctioning, our wills and our values and actual behavior and our desires and our facial expressions and our secret thoughts will constantly be at war with each other. We will be incapable of soul satisfaction, let alone a meaningful or truly good life.

The more clearly defined your values and ideals, the more committed you are to living up to them. The soul is a ship that needs an anchor.

Our value is the sum of our values.

Joe Batten

Your values form the foundation of your life.  Everyone is entitled to their own values, attitudes and beliefs. It is important to accept and respect that other people may well have different attitudes, values and beliefs than you. We do not have the right to expect that others change their values, attitudes and beliefs just because they are different to ours.

We are each a unique expression raised from birth to the present day living our truth based on our own values, beliefs, experience, and understanding. In every given moment we can only be and do our best. Your best will not be the same as someone else’s best.

It's not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are.

Roy Disney

Our system of values is so much a part of us that we cannot separate it from ourselves.  To get a good look at what our values are they say we should take a look at what we spend our money on.   Because money is a limited resource for most people, they will use their money in ways that they value most.

What you do with your money shows what you value with your heart.

Just as your car runs more smoothly and requires less energy to go faster and farther when the wheels are in perfect alignment, you perform better when your thoughts, feelings, emotions, goals, and values are in balance.

Chapter 9, Page 27, Book 17

A shift in perspective makes the particles in your universe dance to different possibilities.

Annie Kagan

Just for today I will keep things in their proper perspective

A dead end is just a good place to turn around.

 Naomi Judd

Keep things in perspective means to look at the whole picture, seeing things in their proper relation/proportion to everything else.

In relation to every thing else that is going on in the world, my little plot in the world seems very peaceful and calm.  This is where I am and where I like to be.  There are things however, that happen now and again that suddenly blow my mind away and that is when I need to look at the whole picture and put things in their proper perspective.

There is nothing good or bad, but thinking makes it so.

William Shakespeare

If we lose our perspective we can end up worrying for hours about things that may never even happen.  I think we often take things out of perspective. We let small incidents grow into major issues.

For instance, it’s not uncommon to let the careless or rude behavior of some driver ruin our day. But who do we hurt when we let our blood pressure go through the roof in response to someone’s rudeness? Generally, our reaction has no impact on the person at fault. But our reactions can and do negatively effect our health. And our altered moods frequently carry over to other relationships and we become curt with someone who had nothing to do with the incident.

By learning to overlook the petty things that people do to try to gain an advantage, whether on the road, in line at the supermarket or wherever they occur, we spend that time and our efforts on things in life that count.

When you wake up every day, you have two choices. You can either be positive or negative; an optimist or a pessimist. I choose to be an optimist. It's all a matter of perspective.

Harvey Mackay

When life gets difficult or troublesome the best thing we can do is to step back and put things into proper perspective.  Dealing with difficult situations can leave you with a new outlook about what is truly important in your life.

In a world bursting with contrived urgency, it’s all too easy to lose sight of what makes life so precious. We can do ourselves a favor, and give ourselves some perspective. As we gain perspective, we'll find that our list of what is truly important will continue to narrow.

Instead of seeing the rug being pulled from under us, we can learn to dance on a shifting carpet.

Chapter 9, Page 26, Book 17

How We Spend Our Days Is How We Spend Our Lives

Annie Dillard

what we do EVERY day defines us

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

Will Durant

We are a sum of all of our life's experiences.  The way in which we react to everything that happens around us determines the quality of our lives.

Our lives are not defined by the things we possess, our lives are defined by the things we pursue.  No matter the current circumstances of our lives, we can choose to pursue anything we desire. We can define our lives by our decisions each morning.  When we  choose to pursue things of lasting value and significance, we can find lasting fulfillment and purpose regardless of how much we possess.

Pursue beauty, faith, hope, love, justice, significance, and contribution. Pursue opportunity to improve this world for somebody else. And realize that our lives are too valuable to waste chasing possessions.

Choices are the building blocks of our lives and despite all the mistakes one makes, a new day brings with itself new opportunities and a whole new world of choices.

Remember that the choice is yours. It has always been.

The doors we open and close each day decide the lives we live.

Chapter 9, Page 25, Book 17

What men and women need is encouragement.... Instead of always harping on a man's faults, tell him of his virtues. Try to pull him out of his rut of bad habits.

Eleanor H. Porter

When things are easy, Keep on keeping on, and when things are tough, keep on going

Nothing else can quite substitute for a few well chosen, welltimed, sincere words of praise. They're absolutely free and worth a fortune.

Sam Walton

A few words of encouragement are like music to our ears..  We can be the ones cheering on the people around us. Just think how a simple word of encouragement does a world of good.

Even though we understand the benefit of kind words, it’s easy to slip into a habit of giving only critical feedback. After all, we are constantly surrounded by negative comments. We just have to glance at a tabloid or watch the news on television to see how hard we can be on one another. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

We can turn the tide with just one word of encouragement.

I am going your way, so let us go hand in hand. You help me and I'll help you. We shall not be here very long ... so let us help one another while we may.

William Morris

Chapter 9, Page 24, Book 17

The great secret that all old people share is that you really haven't changed in seventy or eighty years. Your body changes, but you don't change at all. And that, of course, causes great confusion.

Doris Lessing

What kind of old age are you planning?

Things turn out best for the people who make the best
of the way things turn out.

Art Linkletter

Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that our future will be bright and cheerful. There are people that tend shut themselves away from the world, as they get older. Too often, these dear folks fade into an aimless, sad and lonely existence. There are also others who age into self assured, active, and happy people, with purpose and energy.

It's important to have a twinkle in your wrinkle.

Author Unknown

For me aging is an attitude.  It’s a matter of mind over matter.   If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.  We’re to enjoy all the years of our lives.  No matter what age we are life goes on and the attitude we take is what makes the difference.

You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair.

Chapter 9, Page 23, Book 17

When we have forgotten the language of gratitude, we are no longer on speaking terms with happiness.

Old Saying

It is good to be grateful for all our blessings each day. It puts us in touch with the pulse of life. So often we take everything for granted and yet many things happen in our life that are indeed a blessing. These blessings may not be around tomorrow or next week. But they are around today, to be savored and enjoyed.

To be grateful for blessings reminds us that today is gift and puts us in a much better position to ensure that life doesn't slip by randomly. So many drift through life and never stop to reflect or wonder where they are.

We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.

Thornton Wilder

To look at life with gratitude is to clearly see opportunities. Even at those times of the greatest challenges, with gratitude, any difficulty can be transformed into a blessing, into a meaningful lesson of growth.

For those that read both of my blogs, you know that several years ago I started counting at least 3 things each day that I’m thankful for.  I whole heartily encourage everyone to count their blessings: All that you have, all that is right in your life.  Make it a routine to write your celebrations down daily in a journal and share your gratitude with others. Gratitude brings peace and hope. Gratitude is contagious.

Cultivate an attitude of gratitude, of giving and forgiving. Nothing can bring you peace but yourself.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Chapter 9, Page 22, Book 17

Autumn is the perfect time to take account of what we’ve done, what we didn’t do, and what we’d like to do next year.

Author Unknown

Lists, Lists and more lists

Autumn, the year’s last, loveliest smile

William Cullen Bryant

This time of year it seems my lists are unending.  There is plenty to do inside and out side here at my house.  If I didn’t manage to get done what I wanted to this past summer, it’s too late.  Summer is gone.  Now I’m make lists for Fall and all I’d like to do.

We get about 90 days of Fall before Winter comes, so it seems like plenty of time to complete my Fall bucket list, but we all know how fast time flies by, especially when we’re having fun…

Autumn asks that we prepare for the future—that we be wise in the ways of garnering and keeping. But it also asks that we learn to let go—to acknowledge the beauty of sparseness.

 Bonaro W. Overstreet

They say Autumn is Nature's transformation, a vibrant celebration of life's seasons, riotous color, joy, change, and a breathtaking palette of hope.

On the first day of fall I hope to finish up some projects that are long overdue.  They seem to be hanging on forever, but they are not seasonal so it’s a good day to get them done.  Out with the old and on with the new.

Autumn is a second spring when every leaf's a flower.

Albert Camus

I also want to take my bike for a ride over to the lake here in our small community and see if the trees are changing color there.  I’m thinking that the reflection of the leaves on the water would make for a beautiful picture.

The geese that were just babies yesterday and swam on this lake for hours are all grown up and will soon be flying south to warmer climes.

I am enjoying some sweet fresh apple cider these lingering warm days here in Ohio.  It’s very cool and refreshing. Early Fall has the best of days, warmth and sunshine, and I’m thankful for them.  They make letting go of summer far less painful for me.

Autumn is really the best of the seasons; and I'm not sure that old age isn't the best part of life. But of course, like autumn, it doesn't last.

Clive Staples Lewis

Chapter 9, Page 21, Book 17

A Prayer for World Peace

We pray for the power to be gentle;
the strength to be forgiving;
the patience to be understanding;
and the endurance to accept the consequences
of holding on to what we believe to be right.

May we put our trust in the power of good to overcome evil
and the power of love to overcome hatred.

We pray for the vision to see and the faith to believe
in a world emancipated from violence,
a new world where fear shall no longer lead men or women to commit injustice, nor selfishness make them bring suffering to others.

Help us to devote our whole life and thought and energy
to the task of making peace,
praying always for the inspiration and the power
to fulfill the destiny for which we and all men and women were created.

Amen.

Author Unknown

Rulers are powerful, but prayer has more power

For kings and all who are in authority, in order that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.

1 Timothy 2:2

Five minutes of Prayer for those in Power.  I’ve been asked to commit to praying for those in power.  In these troubled times we live in I thought it worth sharing the thought with all of you.  No matter your religious choice, I think most take time to pray.

We may not like our government leaders but they are the ones in charge of our country so rather than ignoring them or badmouthing them, our time can be better spent in praying for them.

Make no mistake about it Prayer is powerful.  There is power in prayer.

We can pray for those in authority to make wise, cooperative and compassionate decisions and pray for change and a peaceful resolutions to the conflicts around the world.

More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of.

Alfred Lord Tennyson

Chapter 9, Page 20, Book 17

I believe that life is a journey, often difficult and sometimes incredibly cruel, but we are well equipped for it if only we tap into our talents and gifts and allow them to blossom.

Les Brown

Cultivate your talents

Use what talent you possess: the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best.

Author Unknown
Talent does not mean you have to be an artist who paints masterpieces, or a gymnast who does flips. Talent resides within each of us, right now, in many different ways.

Hide not your talents. They for use were made. What's a sundial in the shade.

Benjamin Franklin

Caring for others is a talent, teaching is a talent, making people feel welcome is a talent, solving problems is a talent and parenting is a talent.

It is a happy talent to know how to play.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Never underestimate your talents and try not to compare or wish for the talents of others. Focus on and accept the talents you have, and you will find greater fulfillment in life.

As simple as it sounds, we all must try to be the best person we can: by making the best choices, by making the most of the talents we've been given.

Chapter 9, Page 19, Book 17

Do you realize how beautiful and filled with promise this day is? Once you do, nothing will be able to hold you back.

Ralph Marston

Every sunrise brings the promise of a new day

I have always been delighted at the promise of a new day, a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic waiting somewhere behind the morning.

 J. B. Priestley

It is true...Every day brings with it the promise of a new beginning.    If yesterday was a bad one, be assured that yesterday is gone, it will not come back again.  If you had a great day then put it in your memory chest.  We can always use a good memory or two.

I do love the anticipation of a new day.  It’s like anything can happen !  Each day brings new experiences, new tasks, and new rewards. Every day brings a new chance at life and don’t we all appreciate a second chance.

With a new day comes new strength and new thoughts.

Eleanor Roosevelt

Nothing ever stays the same.  Every day is unique and precious.  We only get to live one day at time…tomorrow is not promised to any one of us.

We can begin again every morning.  No matter what happened in the past, we can start fresh each and every day.

Change is a going to happen.  Every day is going to be a little different from yesterday. No two days are the same. There really are no ordinary days.

The promise of a new day is that light overcomes darkness...that in the darkest moments of life, there is hope for a new beginning.

Chapter 9, Page 18, Book 17

The Paradox Of Our Age

The paradox of our age in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers.
We have wider roads but narrower viewpoints.
We spend more but have less and we buy more but enjoy it less.
We have bigger houses and more conveniences but less time.
We have more experts but more problems, more medicine but less well being.
We have multiplied our possessions but reduced our values.
We've learned to make a living but not a life.
We've added years to life, not life to years.
We've been all the way to the moon and back but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor.
We've conquered outer space but not inner space.
We've done larger things but not better things.
We've cleaned up the air but polluted the soul, split the atom but not our prejudice.
We plan more but accomplish less.
We've learned to rush but not to wait.
We've become long on quantity but short on quality.
But now is the time to appreciate more, to be grateful and to give thanks for everything that is a gift and a blessing.

Today is a gift

For today and its blessings, I owe the world an attitude of gratitude.

Clarence E. Hodges

The older I get, the more I believe that gratitude is the answer to almost every problem we face. It can transform anxiety, anger, and depression.  Today will never be repeated. It it is unique among all the days of your life. Gratitude can transform into something to be remembered.

Count your blessings instead of your crosses;
Count your gains instead of your losses.
Count your joys instead of your woes;
Count your friends instead of your foes.
Count your smiles instead of your tears;
Count your courage instead of your fears.
Count your full years instead of your lean;
Count your kind deeds instead of your mean.
Count your health instead of your wealth;
Count on God instead of yourself.
