Chapter 7, Page 31, Book 17

The adventure of life is to learn.
The purpose of life is to grow.
The nature of life is to change.
The challenge of life is to overcome.
The essence of life is to care.
The opportunity of life is to serve.
The secret of life is to dare.
The spice of life is to befriend.
The beauty of life is to give.
The joy of life is to love.

William Arthur Ward

life is ever changing

Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.

John F. Kennedy

There is nothing more certain in our lives than change. Yet many of us fear change and make elaborate plans to avoid it. We fear the new and find comfort in the stability of the known and familiar.

But to grow, you need to not only accept change, but to embrace it, joyfully. Think of a flowing stream as representing your life. In some places it flows smoothly, with barely a ripple as it travels on its journey. At other places along the way, obstacles create great turbulence; the water roars and thunders as it crashes through gorges and down steep falls.

Change is never easy.  You fight to hold on and you fight to let go.  But letting go is generally the healthiest path forward.  Remind yourself that what you pay attention to grows.  So focus on what really matters and let go of what does not.

The river pictured runs through our town and the falls shown change constantly.  Sometime rushing, sometime calm.

Happy people roll with the punches. They know from experience that everything changes. Today's good fortune may vanish tomorrow, today's crisis may turn out to be tomorrow's good fortune.

Chapter 7, Page 30, Book 17

And as you walk your road,
as you live your life,
relish the road.
And relish the fact
that the road of your life
will probably be a windy road.

Suzan-Lori Parks

on the road

Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures.

H. Jackson Brown, Jr

The dictionary says that the verb relish means to enjoy something immensely. So we’re to enjoy those windy roads of life.  Roads that twist and turn with every step are not easy ones to travel, but still we are to enjoy them.

Because it’s in the trails that are crooked, winding, lonesome and dangerous that lead to the most amazing view.

All you need is the plan, the road map, and the courage to press on to your destination.

Earl Nightingale

Life is a journey down smooth paths, rocky roads and downright treacherous terrain. Joy comes naturally during the easy times of life, but it takes effort to find moments of happiness during adversity.

If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there.

 Lewis Carroll

There are moments of joy in even the most painful times of life. Look for them. It can be a baby's smile, a phone call from a friend, a funny TV show, a beautiful sunrise or a sudden summer shower. Open your heart to these moments and relish in them.

Life is full of pain and sorrow as well as ease and happiness. Those difficult times can make us relish the good times all the more. Embrace your life here, where you are now, and enjoy the journey.

The best path through life is the highway.

Chapter 7, Page 29, Book 17

What's Hope?

Hope is knowing that a positive outcome awaits.
Hope is not only expecting a dream to come true, but having a deep assurance that it's within your reach.
Hope is saying you can.
Hope is knowing that you can improve and that you always get better with practice.
Hope is knowing that you can achieve your goals through hard work and persistence.
Hope is looking to the future with joy and having an expectation of better things to come.
Hope is the knowledge that life is everlasting, and that miracles happen every day.
Hope is something that never abandons you. Even when your life is filled with sadness and disappointment, a spark remains inside to help you get through the rough times.
Hope is one of God's greatest gifts to you, because it's the magic that inspires you to keep trying, learning, loving, and living.

Author Unknown

never lose hope

Just because life can be disappointing, doesn’t mean you have to be. Choose strength, endurance, kindness, love.

Ralph Marston

Disappointment is not an easy thing to face, but standing strong in the face of disappointment and picking yourself up afterwards is crucial to living a good life.

Without hope and expectation, you couldn’t have disappointment. If you set your expectations lower, you’ll have less disappointment, and the disappointment you do experience won’t feel as crushing. If you don’t have hope, your hope can’t be crushed.

But then again, living without hope isn’t a life really worth living. I could not really be happy if I expected everything in life to crumble to ashes.

Let's face it, none of us are ever going to get to the place in life where we have no more disappointments. We can't expect to be sheltered from every little thing. Disappointment is a fact of life and one that must be dealt with. If not, discouragement and devastation are never far away.

You can either let it press you down until you become discouraged, even devastated, or you can use it as a stepping stone to better things by learning to adapt and adjust.  They say that even the most loving heart gets tired of being hurt, but no matter how many wounds we endure we should never lose our ability to love the people that truly deserve it.

We should never let ourselves fall into those extremes, where our values are broken down completely. Because when we lose our values, we lose it all. And if you lose your ability to do the right thing, thinking that it’s not worth it, you’ll stop being yourself.

Accept that disappointments are a part of life and that we should learn from them. Don’t let them turn you into something you’re not.

We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Chapter 7, Page 28, Book 17

Let there be peace on earth.
And let it begin with me.
 Jill Jackson Miller

Peace begins with me

When you've seen beyond yourself, then you may find, peace of mind is waiting there.

 George Harrison

These words remind me that in order to experience peace in the world, I must experience it first within my own heart and mind.  I’ve found that I can  no longer expect outer conditions to make me peaceful or happy.

When you make peace with yourself, and you can retain peace no matter what shows up in your life. Neither the behavior of others nor the tragedies of the world can destroy your inner peace.

For every minute you remain angry, you give up sixty seconds of peace of mind.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Everyone’s idea of peace is different but peace is not a concept.  It is the reality of our own identity and in accordance to its own nature, cannot exist in the presence of fear.  Fear is a powerful, destructive, negative emotion whose energy is fueled by our anticipation of what may happen but probably won’t.

Peace is a beautiful empowering energy that lives within our hearts, always in quiet acceptance of where we are now, at this moment.

Peace begins with a smile.  Smile five times a day at someone you don't really want to smile at at all. Do it for peace.

Chapter 7, Page 27, Book 17

Life is the sum of all your choices.

Albert Camus

Decisions shape your destiny.

I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and  I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.

Robert Frost

All the decisions you have made throughout your life have brought you to where you are today. That’s powerful, when you think about it. There is not much we can control but you manage your life by the decisions you make.

If you let others make decisions for you, then you’re giving them the key to your destiny. That key is yours! You were born with it. It is your way to take charge and take control.

You know how it is. You're 21 or 22, and you make some decisions; then--whish!--you're 70.

T. Wilder

You’re responsible for your life and you need to be in the driver’s seat, especially when it comes to the decisions that affect your future.

There are no guarantees that every decision will come out the way you'd like them to come out. Outcomes are not controllable.  Life is a series of decisions. The key to deciding is to take courage, listen to your heart, choose your path, then go forward, without looking back.

Life is a precious one way journey.  Move forward.

Five frogs are sitting on a log. Four decide to jump off. How many are left? ... Five. Why? Because there’s a difference between deciding and doing!

Chapter 7, Page 26, Book 17

Now seeds are just dimes to the man in the store
And the dimes are the things that he needs,
And I've been to buy them in seasons before
But have thought of them merely as seeds;
But it flashed through my mind as I took them this time,
You purchased a miracle here for a dime.

Edgar Albert Guest

Every seed is small but contains so much potential. So many good stories are small too but that should never take away from their significance. When you nurture good news, you harness the potential and great things begin to happen.

Seeds need good soil and nurturing in order to grow.  In each of us there are negative and posit seeds.

The negative seeds are of anger, hate, discrimination and jealousy
The positive seeds are joy, compassion, understand and loving kindness

Seeds are a miracle of life that we get to participate in .The seeds that are watered regularly take root and thrive.

Your mind is a garden. Your thoughts are the seeds. You can grow flowers or you can grow weeds.

Chapter 7, Page 25, Book 17

Goodness Knows

Goodness knows that sometimes the greatest thing in the world is a smile from a child,
So Goodness laughs a lot.

Goodness knows that it's easier to break a child than to mend one,
So Goodness handles with care.

Goodness knows that everyone deserves a second chance,
And sometimes a third and fourth chance, too.

Goodness knows that we all need friends in this world,
So Goodness is determined to be friendly.

Goodness knows that only people count,
So Goodness never counts out people.

Goodness knows that life is sometimes lonely,
But we are never alone.

And when the sorrows of life are left unexplained, it's still not too much to bear,
For we can trust that Goodness knows.

for goodness sake

For goodness sake, consider what you do.

Shakespeare.

Perhaps you have heard an exasperated parent tell their children, Oh be good for goodness sake!  Unfortunately mom and dad’s idea of goodness may be different from the child’s idea of being good!

I think that just being good for goodness sake is what we’re called to do.  Good things come to those who wait and who do good for others

Whatever we do always has, in part, the aim of making us feel good about ourselves. To achieve this, we have to think that what we are doing...that everything we do worthily we do for some good, or for Goodness' sake, and for the good of others.

One article I read said that, Believe it or not, we Americans have an obsession with goodness! We have a fixation with feeling good and looking good. We all want to feel good. There is certainly nothing wrong with that. I for one do not want to feel bad! On the other hand, we must admit that many of us have made a religion out of doing whatever it takes to feel good. Most of us also want to look good. Again, that is not a bad thing. Who wants to look bad or be embarrassed? So, we lose weight, buy flattering clothes, fix our hair, wear make up, etc. Should we be obsessed with goodness? Absolutely! It is just that we should, in the words of Alfred Lord Tennyson, Hold thou the good; define it well.

John Wesley’s rule was, Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the way you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can

Goodness is the only investment which never fails.

Henry David Thoreau

Anything good endures forever and we need only ask ourselves constantly whether the manner in which we intend spending the next hour is good.

As Shakespeare asked in As You like it, Can one desire too much of a good thing?

a do over

A mistake is not a failure. It is something that goes wrong... and then you fix it. You never fail until you stop trying.

Suzie Heyman

We fear mistakes more than anything else. Mistakes bring on ridicule and hold us back from doing many things.  Regrets smother us until we become even more fearful.  It’s a vicious cycle.

Remember that not one of us is perfect.  We all make mistakes.  Many have also walked that path of fear.  To get where we are going, you may have to make a mistake or two, so why not go for it.

A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.

Albert Einstein

A life without mistakes is lived without JOY!

I’ve learned that peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard realities to deal with.  Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still remain calm in your mind.

It’s ok if you mess up, that is how you get wiser.  Give yourself a break.  Don’t give up!  Good things take time.

There are many lessons in life to learn. Life is a continuous growth process. Don’t let mistakes break you.  Let them make you.

We are all a work in progress, which means we get there a little at a time, not all at once.

Mistakes show us what we need to learn.

Peter McWilliams

Chapter 7, Page 23, Book 17

We're so busy watching out for what's just ahead of us that we don't take time to enjoy where we are.

 Bill Watterson

Live life to the fullest each and every day.

Forever is composed of nows.

 Emily Dickinson

No doubt where I am in this stage of life has something to do with my focus on the future rather than the past. So far this year, I’ve had to downsize and move to a smaller place.  It’s all on one floor and there is much less that I need to do and take care of.

My future is shorter than my past as I’ve probably lived three quarters of my life, maybe even more. No one knows the number of one’s days except God, but I’m confident that my number of days remaining on this earth is fewer than the number I’ve lived already, unless God chooses to make me the oldest woman alive.

I’ve  come to grips with the reality that I'm facing a shorter future, so I’m trying to prepare for it.  As the number of years has continued to pile up, as I’ve watched others even younger than me face death, as my knee hurts sometimes, my hair gets thinner, and I forget things I never used to forget, I can no longer ignore the reality that I won’t live forever. There is no guarantee that I’ll be here tomorrow. Furthermore, it’s mostly out of my control.

We spend precious hours fearing the inevitable. It would be wise to use that time adoring our families, cherishing our friends and living our lives.

Maya Angelou

I’ve decide that I might as well make peace with the future since no amount of fear, discomfort, anxiety, or need to conquer the unknown will change the fact that the unknown is exactly that, unknown and unknowable.

I continue to be thankful for each and every day and count my blessings because I know I’m not the one in control of the universe.  I trust and believe in the good Lord who holds the future in His hands and does a much better job of it than I could ever do.

I’ve learned to live in today, to be thankful and trust a trustworthy God.

Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Chapter 7, Page 22, Book 17

Never underestimate the healing power
of a long, deep breath.
Not only does it create inner calm,
it gives you space to acknowledge
and appreciate that this breath
is not your last one.

Lori Deschene

Just Breathe

I will Breathe
I will think of solutions.
I will not let
My worry control me.
I will not let my
Stress level break me.
I will simply breathe.
And it will be Okay.
Because I don’t quit.

Shayne McClendon

If you’ve ever found yourself in a time when you’ve lost your breath or found it hard to breath, you can truly appreciate the healing a deep breath can do.

When my head is spinning I have to remember to stop, be still and breathe. When we find ourselves in the midst of chaos and difficulty, we are so consumed by it, that we may hold our breath.

Where the breath goes, the mind follows. If your breath is shallow and short, it could indicate an anxious, negative thought pattern. Slowing the breath down to accommodate longer inhales and exhales helps to slow the mind down.

There are times in our lives that we all need a little breathing space.  Times to breathe deeply and heal.

My TO DO list for today:

Count my blessings
Practice kindness
Let go of what I can’t control
Listen to my heart
Be productive yet calm
Just Breathe

words of peace and love

Sweet, cheerful words, coming from a kind heart, are worth more than gold and gems…

Rosella Rice

Sadly, I’ve found that is there is little or no peace in many of the words I hear these days.  Nearly everyone can recall the sting of unkind words and perhaps even the guilty awareness of the injury caused by unkind words that were spoken.  We are divided by words that cut and slice and have forgotten love for our fellow man.

Words matter, choose them  wisely.  They are powerful and have a great impact on others.  It’s not so much what you say but how you say it.  An encouraging word at the right time can make all the difference in someone’s life.

I’ve always lived with the premise that if you haven’t got something good to say…don’t say it.  I’m far from perfect though and have learned that sometimes the people we love the most are the ones we hurt the most.  A slip of the tongue, a thoughtless word can cause a lot of hurt.

Sometimes we can talk less and say more.  Words matter, so make your words count

The kindest word in all the world is the unkind word, unsaid.

Chapter 7, Page 20, Book 17

Every sunset is also a sunrise.
It all depends on where you stand.

Karl Schmidt

In the glow of each morning seek adventure
In the shade of each sunset, embrace peace.

Every time you wake up and ask yourself, What good things am I going to do today?, remember that when the sun goes down at sunset, it will take a part of your life with it.

 Proverb

Life can get monotonous with the daily grind but it doesn't have to be that way.  Every day is a new challenge, a new adventure, a new opportunity.  For me it can be as simple as discovering some new each and every day .

We are each responsible for our own adventures.  No one can make the journey for us and each and every day is different for each one of us.  One thing is for sure the adventure will have it’s twists and turns but while we are on it we should just enjoy the ride.

Enjoy every moment of your life and don’t take it for granted.  Take every day as it comes and look at every day as a new adventure.  Life is an adventure - the ups, downs, curves, and the turns.  Remember all those ups and downs help us to find balance in our being.

Have courage for the great sorrows of life, and patience for the small ones. When you have laboriously accomplished your daily tasks, go to sleep in peace. God is awake.

Chapter 7, Page 19, Book 17

Always think on the bright side--no matter what life brings
to your day.  You'll gain a treasure within your soul
that no worry or hardship can ever take away.

Isaac Purcell

I am richly blessed

Money is not required to buy one necessity of the soul.

Henry David Thoreau

Far beyond worldly goods, I have a treasure chest full of blessings.   I don’t have a lot of material things in my life, but I do have so much more.  When you count your blessings each day you find just how rich your life truly is.

I am rich beyond measure.

It is not what we take up, but what we give up, that makes us rich.

Henry Ward Beecher

We live in a world where wealth is primarily determined by how much we have in our bank account and how many toys we possess.   We need to remember however, that there is something that cannot be taken from us in the way we can lose a job, our savings, or even loved ones.

It’s our smiles, our concern for one another.  It is reaching out to help someone in need.  It is listening to another and offering our gift of attention to them.  That is what I call real wealth.  Blessings are not possessions.

It's good to have money and the things that money can buy, but it's good, too, to check up once in a while and make sure you haven't lost the things money can't buy.

George Lorimer

The greatest thing about real wealth is that the more we share it, the more we all gain.    When we are really wealthy, it is not being seen for what we have but for how we see.  True wealth is love and in the way we reach out to one another.

Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life, and the world.

Sarah Ban Breathnach
