Chapter 6, Page 30, Book 17

I was thinking that we all learn by experience, but some of us have to go to summer school.

Peter De Vries

My goal for this summer is just to fall back in love with the world and live again.

If there is one thing that summer teaches us it is how to keep cool.  It teaches is that there truly is no place like home.

We learn that mom was always right.  Mosquitos are big and nasty during the humid summer months.  So spray on the spray and do like mom says.

We learn slow down and take it easy. To stop and watch the fireflies or the butterflies.  They are amazing.

We learn that when hard things happen, truth doesn’t stop being true, but it might be lost for awhile.  God is still Good and beautiful things still happen.

Summer is the annual permission slip to be lazy.  To do nothing and have it count for something.  To lie in the grass and count the stars. To sit on a branch and study the clouds.

Chapter 6, Page 29, Book 17

Memories are fragile things to hold, but many times, it’s what we have.

Ann Howard Creel

Our memory is a funny thing.  We remember things that we wish we could forget and forget things that we want to remember.

To remember means to make present now the effect of what has happened in the past.  Memory is meant to affect how we think and behave today.

That is why I think it is so important to keep making new memories every day.  Happy memories to keep close to our hearts.

I’ll never forget the fun of playing in the creek with my cousins on a hot summer day and I hope my children and grandchildren will have memories than never fade too.

Even when times are tough it’s important to make a memories that will endure.  Be grateful and find laughter in each and every single day.

When you make your own memories , one day you’ll be able to replace the bad ones with something memorable!

This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it

Chapter 6, Page 28, Book 17

In the ordinary days and ways of life.

Just another day in my extraordinary ordinary life

Do not wait for extraordinary circumstances to do good action; try to use ordinary situations.

Jean Paul Richter

In our ordinary days, we pedal faster to keep up the pace and cover the bases, sometimes never pausing to thank the Lord for the ability to maintain that day’s journey. We murmur and complain when our days become weeks, even months, of muddled housework, homework, yard work, earning a living work, and taking care of a multitude of other ordinary needs we’ve faced.

It’s a fact though, real life happens in the small moments we find on the most ordinary day of the week. Ordinary small moments help us slow down and lean into the daily rhythms of work, family, and friends. They are those tiny, fingerprint sized moments where we build trust and faith and love and relationships. That’s when truly wonderful things happen.

There is a simple beauty in those ordinary days. They provide us with a quiet space to create a life of deep connection and love, and of giving to others. A life where you have the time and the energy to be fully present.

Normal day — let me be aware of the treasure you are. Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow. Let me hold you while I may — for it will not always be so. One day I shall dig my nails into the earth or bury my face in the pillow,  or stretch myself taut, or raise my hands to the sky and want more then all the world to return to you, normal day.

Chapter 6, Page 27, Book 17

In the ordinary days and ways of life.

There is nothing ordinary about an ordinary day.

What you do every day matters more than what you do once in a while.

Gretchen Rubin

We often claim that we don’t have enough hours in a day, and we also seem to believe that just a little bit more time would relieve the pressure that we feel to accomplish all we need to do.

The truth is we don’t need more time, we need to prioritize the time that we have. More time wouldn’t diminish interruptions and distractions; it would just create more. One of the reasons that we aren’t thriving is because we are making poor use of our hours and minutes in daily and weekly life.

The ordinary arts we practice every day at home are of more importance to the soul than their simplicity might suggest.

 Thomas More

Sometimes you simply have to stop fretting, wondering, and doubting.  Have faith that things will work out, maybe not how you planned, but just how it’s meant to be.

Excellence is doing ordinary things extraordinarily well.

Jose Ortega Y Gasset

You alone get to choose what matters and what does not.  The meaning of everything in your life has precisely the meaning you give it. There is wonder in the ordinary.  Remember whatever you do, make sure it is something that makes you smile!

Life can be ordinary or it can be great

Chapter 6, Page 26, Book 17

In the ordinary days and ways of life.

I’m striving to live an ordinary life in extra ordinary ways.

The grace of God means something like: Here is your life. You might never have been, but you are because the party wouldn't have been complete without you. Here is the world. Beautiful and terrible things will happen. Don't be afraid. I am with you....

There's only one catch. Like any other gift, the gift of grace can be yours only if you'll reach out and take it.

Maybe being able to reach out and take it is a gift too.

Frederick
Blechner

It is said that we are to boast only in God’s glory revealed in our lives through grace. It is God’s grace that we can be proud of. No accomplishment of our own can match the amazing grace of God.

Today my thoughts turn to how we tend to crave the wrong things. We long for something better, and we think it’s just ahead. If only I were out of school. If only I had that job. If only I were married. If only I could retire. If only . . .

It’s one of life’s great lies that we need to be somewhere else, doing something else, with someone else before we start truly living.

The truth is today is the only day we have, who knows what tomorrow may bring.  And ordinary days can be extra ordinary.  It’s all in the way we choose to look at it.  Sometimes we can do something to make extraordinary things happen, but truly it is  the blessings that God sends our way that enables us to do anything at all.

Time is not measured by the years that you live
But by the deeds you do and the joy that you give--
And each day as it comes brings a chance to each one
To love to the fullest, leaving nothing undone
That would brighten the life or lighten the load
Of some weary traveler lost on Life's Road--
So what does it matter how long we may live
If as long as we live we unselfishly give.

Just for today...

Anyone can carry his burden, however hard, until nightfall. Anyone can do his work, however hard, for one day. Anyone can live sweetly, patiently, lovingly, purely, till the sun goes down. And this is all that life really means.

Robert Louis Stevenson

One week from today we will welcome another new month.  This is the last week of June and as much as I try to treasure each new day, it still flew by with the speed of lightning.  With the sale of the old house I can now move forward.  Yes it is officially sold.  What once seemed like a gigantic feat is over and done.

With all that behind me it’s like I almost don’t know how to act or what to do, hence the Just For Today quotes.  After months of work, some of it was hard labor with all the downsizing, and suffering the loss of my dear Sister and oldest Son, mixed in with all the rest, it’s little wonder that I’m not so sure what to do.

On the bright side I do have a home, and my family and friends that mean the world to me. So I’m sure there is still a lot for me to do.  Just for today...

Just for today SMILE a little more.
Just for today ask someone how he or she is really doing.
Just for today remember while some may have it better than you do,
there are others whose definitely have it worse than you!
Just for today just let it go. Just for today..

Our attitude is a choice

Some people are making such thorough preparation for rainy days that they aren’t enjoying today’s sunshine.

William Feather

Don’t see your struggles as an interruption to life but as preparation for life.  Our problems do not  define us and our circumstance do not control us.  We always have a choice.

We need these interruptions to grow.  Sometimes it takes an interruption of our plans to start the life the life that’s better than we could imagine.

Remember: The difference between a problem and an opportunity depends upon our attitude towards a challenging situation.

Problems are only opportunities with thorns on them.

Delight in Simple Things

Learn to like what doesn’t cost too much.
Learn to like reading, conversation, music.
Learn to like plain food, plain service, plain cooking.
Learn to like fields, trees, brooks, hiking, rowing, climbing hills.
Learn to like people, even though some of them may be different from you.
Learn to like to work and enjoy the satisfaction of doing your job as well as it can be done.
Learn to like the songs of birds, the companionship of dogs.
Learn to like gardening, puttering around the house, and fixing things.
Learn to like the sunrise and sunset, the beating of rain on the roof and windows, and the gentle fall of snow on a winter day.
Learn to keep your wants simple, and refuse to be controlled by the likes and dislikes of others.

Invite delight

If you are paying attention, then the day is going to be pretty joyful, and a lot of delight will fill it.

Greg Boyle

Delight means to please greatly, to take great pleasure in to revel to captivate.  We all want to take great pleasure in life and revel in the simplest of gifts.

Living simply means means setting your priorities straight.  We all crave more delight in our lives. Breath taking pleasure in the ordinary is possible, but it is easily abandoned as our lives speed up, priorities get out of whack.

Making space for the important stuff will allow you to live a life you love, a life that is closer to your dreams.

Our days define our life.

Wise are those who learn that the bottom line doesn't always have to be their top priority.

It is all in the smile…

It's the Songs you sing and the Smiles you wear that
make the Sunshine everywhere.

Author Unknown

It always feels to good to smile. It makes people look so beautiful and full of life. When you smile it makes you feel happy, and negative thoughts just go away.

A smile is instant sunshine! Spread a little sunshine everywhere you go!

A smile puts you on the right track. A smile makes the world a beautiful place. When you lose your smile, you lose your way in the chaos of life.

Roy T. Bennett

When I think about it all my happiness comes from making others happy. Seeing them smile or feel better about themselves because of something I did makes me feel warm and full of sunshine. If I can make one person smile everyday, then I think I have done my job.

If the world had more people taking the time to encourage others and make them feel better, maybe we wouldn't be in the world we are today. Sometimes all people need is someone to be a ray of sunshine
to brighten them up

Remember:

If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are more blessed than the million who will not survive the week.

If you have food in your refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75 percent of the world.

If you have money in the bank or in your wallet, you are among the top 80 percent of the worlds wealthy.

If you hold up your head with a smile on your face and are truly thankful, you are blessed because the majority can, but most do not.

Welcome Summer !

What is one to say about June, the time of perfect young summer, the fulfillment of the promise of the earlier months, and with as yet no sign to remind one that its fresh young beauty will ever fade.

Gertrude Jekyll

It’s the first day of summer and the first day of the rest of my life.

When I thought about how I might live life from now on, I didn’t really find a whole lot that I’d do differently.  More than not, there is not of lot of changes I’ll be making.  Most of what is on my do list is much the same as I’ve been doing, but when something isn’t broke you don’t try and fix it.

I want to:

Live every day on a fresh new start.
Be true to who I am.
Quit complaining.
Focus on What vs. How
Live more consciously each day
Appreciate something each day and give thanks for it.

Each day is a gift and that’s why we call it the Present!

Wishing you all a safe and happy Summer !

Then followed that beautiful season... Summer....
Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light; and the landscape
Lay as if new created in all the freshness of childhood.

Going the extra mile...

I’m walking on sunshine…and don’t it feel good!

When people do more than they have to, and do so with an attitude of generosity, they give of themselves in ways that lift all of humanity. The heart grows tender when we extend ourselves beyond what’s expected. Going the extra mile is a vital ingredient that lifts our mood, allowing hopefulness to rule. That’s what I call going the extra mile with a smile!  I’ve even heard it called Smile Mile.

The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.

 Jimmy Johnson

Being extraordinary isn’t reserved for the rich, the famous, the powerful, or the privileged. Extraordinary people exist within even the most seemingly ordinary lives.  They are the ones with the knack for living genuinely and who inspire us to attempt the same.

When you give a little, you can help.  Sometimes the best way to make a difference is to open your heart and be a friend, whatever that means to the person who needs one.

The most meaningful acts are often the ones we commit without prompting or expectations.

We have such profound power when we lend an ear, a hand, or an act of kindness because it reminds the recipient that people are good. People do care. That’s what gives life meaning: the people who touch our lives and the people whose lives we touch.

Go the extra mile, it is never crowded.

Make your Blessings count !

Count your blessings.
Once you realize how valuable you are
and how much you have going for you,
the smiles will return, the sun will break out,
the music will play, and you will finally be able to move forward
with the life that God intended for you
with grace, strength, courage, and confidence.

Og Mandino

The Way To Make Your Blessings Count Is To Count Your Blessings

If you are wondering how to count your blessings, here are some simple steps to practice.

Do everything with your full attention.
 Enjoy simple pleasures.
 Make time for other people.
Count your blessings. Name them one by one
Cultivate your dreams, but don't let them breed discontent.
 Don't wish your time away.
Quit the, I'll be happy whens.

When we have forgotten the language of gratitude, we are no longer on speaking terms with happiness.

Old Saying

Gratitude makes us happier people.   We can either count our blessings or our problems. Counting blessings  causes problems to shrink, and soon we forget they exist.

Blessings here blessings there, blessings are just about everywhere!  Every day may not be a good one but there is something good to be found in every day.

Being grateful means appreciating what we have.   If you want to cheer yourself up, even on the darkest of days, count your blessings.

For today and its blessings, I owe the world an attitude of gratitude.

A Prayer for Fathers Day

God our Father, we give you thanks and praise for fathers young and old.

We pray for fathers newly embracing fatherhood, may they find courage and
perseverance to balance work, family and faith in joy and sacrifice

We pray for our own fathers around the world whose children are lost or suffering:

May they know that the God of compassion walks with them in their sorrow.

We pray for men who are not fathers but still mentor and guide us with fatherly love and advice

We remember fathers, grandfathers and great grandfathers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish with their love.

Amen

Wishing you all a very happy and blessed Fathers Day!

The balance of life

A little work, a little play
To keep us going—and so, good day!
A little warmth, a little light
Of love's bestowing—and so, goodnight!
A little fun, to match the sorrow
Of each day's growing—and so, good morrow!
George du Maurier

I painted the sign above on a piece of slate that I’d collected, in answer to a request by my daughter.  She has a special place in mind to put it.

It certainly got me to thinking that life is truly a matter of holding on and letting to.  We let go of our parents hands when we begin to walk, but we hold on to them tightly throughout our lives.  We let go of our own children as they grow up and move on with their lives, but we hold them in our hearts with love.

Sometimes we feel so helpless that we hold on to things we are better off letting go. Letting go after all is not easy.

We come into this world head first and go out feet first; in between, it is all a matter of balance.

Paul Boese

All through life we hold on and let go of many many things.  We get two choices: to hold on to the past,  complain, and be completely miserable or let go of everything that is no longer relevant.

We hold on to the dreams and goals that are authentic and that represent who you are and let go of the ones that we don’t feel so strong about anymore and create new ones.

Just as your car runs more smoothly and requires less energy to go faster and farther when the wheels are in perfect alignment, you perform better when your thoughts, feelings, emotions, goals, and values are in balance.

Brian Tracy

I’ve learned that life of genuine balance and peace starts when you learn to let go without regret and hold on with gratitude.

Be aware of wonder. Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.

It’s a new day so shine on...

Hope is like the sun, which, as we journey toward it casts the shadow of our burden behind us.

Samuel Smiles

With hope we are able to find light in the darkness around us. With all of the other violence, negativity, and despair being thrown at us by the media, I feel as though we need to be reminded of hope.

Hope is an important tool. It helps us to get through times that otherwise would seem unbearable.  Hope responds to the aspirations to happiness that have been placed in our hearts.  It is what helps us to get past the negativity of the world we see today and allows us to believe that what we see before us can change.

We have always held to the hope, the belief, the conviction that there is a better life, a better world, beyond the horizon.

Franklin D. Roosevelt

As long as we have hope and faith alive in our hearts then nothing will be able to bring down our spirits. It lets us see the good in every situation.  Even in a hopeless situation hope remains open to surprise.

Keep the faith. The most amazing things in life tend to happen right at the moment you’re about to give up hope.

Hope is a seed God plants in our hearts to remind us there are better things ahead.

heart wide open

Morning is the dream renewed, the heart refreshed, earth's forgiveness painted in the colors of the dawn.

Kent Nerburn

It seems we are obsessed with protecting our hearts, to shield ourselves, and put insulation around our hearts, to keep pain from entering in.  We put walls up and believe this keeps us safe.  Rather than face any disappointments in life we avoid taking risks with our hearts.

But know this:  If you are living with a wide open heart, there is absolutely no way to keep joy out. That’s just one of those wonderful consequences of allowing yourself to be completely alive.

Some days there won't be a song in your heart. Sing anyway.

Emory Austin

If we choose the road less traveled, the one where we say yes to being wide open, we know that we are, in effect, choosing to be challenged.  We are all vulnerable and no one likes the pain of rejection. However, sometimes we learn and gain the most from the moments that are the most uncomfortable.

Love is who we are. Love is what gives us power, radiance and strength to continue to believe in the goodness of people and the beauty of life. There is no force more powerful than that of love. Let your heart be your guide.

Nobody has ever measured, even poets, how much a heart can hold.

The salt of the earth

The roots of love sink down and
deep and strike out far, and they are
arteries that feed our lives, so we
must see that they get the water
and sun they need so they can
nourish us.  And when you put
something good into the world,
something good comes back to you.

Merle Shain

It’s an old saying, but I’ve heard it said that some people are the salt of the earth. Being described by someone as the salt of the earth is quite a compliment, it means that you are a person of great worth and reliability.

When you consider the qualities you find most attractive in people, kindness, cheerfulness, thoughtfulness, or helpfulness may come to mind. When you see people with these qualities, you are drawn to them; you want to get to know them and maybe even become more like them. Well, these same qualities can make you more attractive as well.

Influence, just like salt shaken out, is hard to see, but its flavor is hard to miss.

Pam Farrel

The lives of many people are in great need of seasoning. We can make manual labor tangy and human relationships zesty.
It’s all about reaching out to others in genuine concern and compassion. It’s about offering to help someone with a problem. It’s about accompanying someone through a difficult time without expecting any reward or any thanks. It means giving flavor to life.

You are the salt of the earth.

Matthew 5:13

Make life deliciously delightful.
