Chapter 9, Page 1, Book 16

Sorrow and scarlet leaf,
Sad thoughts and sunny weather.
Ah me, this glory and this grief
Agree not well together!

Thomas Parsons, 1880, A Song For September

September 1st - going with the flow

By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer’s best of weather
And autumn’s best of cheer.

Helen Hunt Jackson, September

It’s hard to believe Labor Day weekend is almost here.  The grand children are back in school now and I’ve seen some leaves changing on the trees.  September is a transition month for many of us as summer moves closer to autumn.  It’s almost as though it gives us permission to face our workload and get back into a routine.

The foliage has been losing its freshness through the month of August, and here and there a yellow leaf shows itself like the first gray hair amidst the locks of a beauty who has seen one season too many.

Oliver Wendell Holmes

The months and seasons affect everything, from what we wear to the way we feel.  It hasn’t quite cooled down enough to put my summer lightweight clothing away.  That usually comes about the 3rd weekend in September for us. But signs of change are all around us.

The days are definitely shorter than they were.  We’ve lost over an hour of daylight both in the mornings and the evenings,  I for one will feel the loss.  When it gets darker earlier I find myself going to bed earlier and my day is shorter too.

All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another.

Anatole France

The last few weeks have brought some changes into my life that really shook me up, but then life is always full of change.   We can only go with the flow just as the seasons go and come, and do the best we can   I’ve found that one day at a time is the best way to live.

So I’m welcoming September and the changes that will come with it.  Change keeps us flexible and ... sometimes a little cranky too.

The goldenrod is yellow
The corn is turning brown
The trees in apple orchards
With fruit are bending down.

So true Ma that living one day at a time is the best way to go. Sorry about the changes that shook you up over the past few weeks. Some interesting times here to. Just trusting in God and praying a lot. It was getting dark before 7 p.m. last night, had to almost have a light on when we were eating dinner. Still warm, but definitely a change in the air with the heat. Can't believe it is September already.

September is THE month of the year. Sherry married me during this month, so it is MY lucky month.
We are staying in central Florida for a few more days to avoid the TS that is brewing between us and North CArolina.
Have a good weekend.

There are subtle changes here too, but only the watchful notice. Sumac, sage, and angle of light all say autumn is not far away.

Changes that shake up our lives can be disconcerting. I hope these changes are not too problematic. You are in my thoughts. Take care.
