Chapter 5, Page 25, Book 16

Sultry, steaming, sweltering. . . .Slow down.  Or stop.  It's time to shed ambition and expectation, along with commutes, clothing, cellular phones, calendars.  Now our wants seem to diminish.  Is it because our needs are met?  A shady nook, a cold drink, a cool breeze--whether indoors or out.  A respite from the rigors of the day.  Time off for good behavior.  Summer is not so much a season as a melody, that tune of contentment we hum as the days begin to beautifully blur.  The pursuit of happiness becomes our personal priority this month, as the sweet strains of . . . Harmony start to be heard in our hearts.

May 25th -  a taste of summer

All green and fair the summer lies,
Just budded from the bud of spring,
With tender blue of wistful skies,
And winds that softly sing.

Susan Coolidge

We here in northern Ohio are having a taste of summer here today.  It’s been a long time since we had temps near 80 degrees.  We actually had a milder winter than usual and I’m thankful for that.  However it seemed to go on and on and we even had some snow in May this year.  It’s been below normal temp wise for us so this warm spell we are experiencing is a welcome relief.

It won’t be officially summer for a few weeks yet and Memorial Day weekend is very iffy with rain in the forecast, but we’ll be warmer here and that makes a huge difference.  I don’t think that those that live in southern climes, really appreciate the warm weather they have.  If you don’t experience winter, you can’t really appreciate summer the way we do.  Summertime is a short season for us.  We have few sunny days compared to the many dark and dreary ones.  Many take a Vitamin D supplement due to the lack of sunshine.

So whether or not it’s actually summer isn’t important.  What is important is that it is like summer.

In summer, the song sings itself.

William Carlos Williams

I like that thought that summer is just not a season but a melody. Here I think we have 9 months of summer (actually I'm exaggerating a bit but lots of sunny warm days and then of course the extreme heat). I did appreciate summer in Montana though and wished I could bottle up those summer days to release them in winter.

Summer is a respite and I do look forward to it, though I love autumn more. Thought this quote was beautiful. "In summer, the song sings itself."

Glad you are having a taste of Summer. You are right, if you do not experience winter, you cannot appreciate Summer as much. We have been blessed to make it south most winters in the last 20 or so. Then we follow spring north.

BUT we can remember the few winters in North central Missouri, with snow that came in the first winter month and stayed until spring..

Good entry!
