Chapter 2, Page 28, Book 14

20 days until Spring

It is not good to be too free. It is not good to have everything one wants.

Blaise Pascal

If we had everything we ever wanted, what would we have to hope for, what would we have to do?  I say I’m contented with what I do have and that I have everything I need, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t have some hope for some things I’d like to have.

I like to have a warm sunny spring day to enjoy

I’d like to have a nap on the porch

I’d like to have all my family together in one place at the same time.

I don’t need these things, but I would like to have them.

It’s the same with obligations.  We sometimes feel the weight of them on our shoulders.  There are plenty of things we really don’t want to do.  We’d like to be free of them.  Yet it is a good thing we have them.  They force us to do what we really don’t want to do sometimes, but what is really the best thing for us in the long run. Without a list of things to do, I’d get bored.  Thankfully I don’t think I’ve ever had one of those in my life.

Life is made up, not of great sacrifices or duties, but of little things, in which smiles and kindness, and small obligations given habitually, are what preserve the heart and secure comfort.

Chapter 2, Page 27, Book 14

I can't tell you when,
but I can promise you,
it will get better,
It will get easier,
and it will all be worthwhile
Just promise me
you won't ever give up.

Author Unknown

Pictures taken last May

Never give up, for this is just the place and time that the tide will turn.

Harriet Beecher Stowe

There truly have been days this winter that I’ve just wanted to give up.  I’d rather stay under the covers than to wake up.  But the lure of each day makes me want to get up and see just what each day has to offer.

Days come and go and each one so different.  Yesterday might not have been so good, but maybe today will be better.  I always have hope in my heart.  When we don't give up, something amazing happens.

Nothing ever stays the same.  It’s wonderful to think that each day brings something new.  Every moment we live is a gift.  When we live in the moment we can enjoy each moment.  Every day we have an opportunity to love our families more, to love our lives more,  to live a life that matters.

Live every moment, laugh every day, love beyond words

Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments and places that take our breath away.

Chapter 2, Page 26, Book 14

All Things Pass
by Helen Steiner Rice

Let all your thoughts be happy, dear,
To chase away all thoughts of fear.
Think of lovely things you’ve see
Like rolling slopes of velvet green,
Fluffy clouds of azure blue
Sparkling drops of crystal dew,
Robin redbreasts on the wing
Telling us again it’s spring
Golden beds of daffodils,
Violets  blooming on a hill…
Don’t cloud your mind with anxious fear,
Just fill your heart with sunny cheer
And waiting days will soon be over
And you’ll again be back in clover
For all things pass…and this will, too,
And with God’s help you'll come SMILING through.

I can never say enough good about the poems of Helen Steiner Rice.  She seems to write from the heart.

After yesterday’s rather discouraging post, I thought I’d better redeem myself with something inspirational today.  I even spent a little time in selecting some of my favorite pictures of flowers blooming around my house last year.   The scenery outside seems to be quite unchanging right now and I need some color in my life.  It looks like we added another couple of inches of snow again last night.

Chapter 2, Page 25, Book 14

Keep your faith in beautiful things;
in the sun when it is hidden,
in the Spring when it is gone.

Roy R. Gibson

Keeping the faith here this morning as I watch the snow come down.  There is new snow on the ground and it’s still snowing.

I really don’t think it’ll be much more than an inch or so, none the less it is there.  It won’t be hard to shovel away, it isn’t much at all.  Still it is there…

There seems to be so much more winter than we need this year.

Chapter 2, Page 24, Book 14

A prayer to start off the week.

May there be peace within you today. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you embrace endless possibilities that will always come your way. May you use the gifts that you have received and pass on the love given to you. May you be content knowing you are a child of God. May you feel unburdened, free and energised by a sense of God in your life. May you know that it's ok not to have it all worked out and that God will also help you work it out too! May you treasure this day as a precious gift and be open to some surprise along the way. May you finish today with a sense of gratitude, knowing you have done your best and that no more is asked of you. Amen

As we start a new week, I’m sharing my snow pictures with you.  These were taken Sunday afternoon.  This week is to be colder so I really don’t think there will be much more melting going on here.  If we happen to accumulate any new snow I may post a picture of that but otherwise you’ll be seeing the snow report next Monday.

All of us can only do the best we can with what we’ve got and I hope to find something better to share with you as the week rolls on.  Today is such a precious gift and with that said I know there will be some surprises on hand too.  There always is…

Today is Monday with grand’ma’ at my house.  Two of my little grands are coming to spend the day.  There is nothing much better than that for starters.  These little ones never cease to amaze and thrill me.

I do pray your Monday is off to a very good start.  Keep your eyes wide open to some surprises along your way!

Chapter 2, Page 23, Book 14

After some melting snow disappeared we discovered the daffodils are once again beginning to push up through the ground.  This picture was taken last year.  They are the very first flowers that bloom here each year and are such a welcome sight.

I may never see tomorrow. There's no written guarantee, and things that happened are history. I cannot predict the future. I cannot change the past. I have just the present moment. I must treat it as my last.

I must use this moment wisely for it soon will pass away, and be lost forever as part of yesterday. I must exercise compassion, help the fallen to their feet. Be a friend unto the friendless, make an empty life complete.

The unkind things I do today may never be undone, and friendships that I fail to win may nevermore be won. I may not have another chance on bended knees to pray, and I thank God with a humble heart for giving me this day.

Author Unknown

Thankful people are happy people, and happy people are thankful people.    And I’m still learning ...

If you have read my blog for any amount of time, you should know that I try to be a thankful and happy person.  So today I’m sharing a few thoughts about thankful people.

Did you know that thankfulness stops pride growing. Being thankful puts the credit where credit is due.  We can thank people for things that they do and who they are, and that’s important and encouraging for them.  Humble people are happy givers who are fully aware and in awe of the grace bestowed on them. They know that God is faithful and they live their lives in that knowing.

When I’m struggling with feeling thankful to God, I try and think of just 3 things each day to be thankful for. It might be that I have enough food, or the weather, or something that happened that day. Thanking God for these 3 things every day is a way to nurture my soul.  When you choose to focus on the good things, you find that complaining and pessimism tend to leave a bad taste in your mouth,

I think that humility is the key to being a thankful person.   To see someone who is grateful is to find someone who is humble.  Be humble and don’t grumble be thankful instead.   Focusing on gratitude takes our eyes off of ourselves and puts them on God’s blessings and the positive sides to our circumstances.

Here is what’s on my thankful list today:

1433. for activities that get us outdoors in the sunshine
1434. for a few days above freezing
1435. for a cup of Christmas tea, a fruity and refreshing drink

Chapter 2, Page 22, Book 14

For A Reason

Author unknown

Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there, they serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson or help figure out who you are or who you want to become. Sometimes things happen to you and at the time they may seem horrible, painful and unfair, but in reflection you realize that without overcoming those obstacles you would have never realized your potential strength.

Everything happens for a reason. Nothing happens by chance or by means of good or bad luck. Illness, injury, love, lost moments of true greatness and sheer stupidity all occur to test the limits of your soul. Without these small tests, life would be like a smoothly paved, straight, flat road to nowhere. It would be safe and comfortable but dull and utterly pointless.

If someone hurts you, betrays you or breaks your heart, forgive them, for they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious to whom you open your heart to. If someone loves you, love them back unconditionally, not only because they love you, but because they are teaching you to love and opening your heart and eyes to things you would have never seen or felt without them.

Make every day count. Appreciate every moment and take from it everything that you possibly can, for you may never be able to experience it again. Hold your head up because you have every right to. Tell yourself you are a great individual and believe in yourself, for if you don't believe in yourself, no one else will believe in you either. You can make of your life anything you wish. Create your own life and then go out and live it.

I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason.  I don’t even bother to question the whys or wherefores in life anymore.  I’ve accepted that life goes on no matter what and think that it’s up to us to do the best with what we are given…or not.

I don’t know why our weather surprises us so.  It’s been going on this way since creation.  The weather men here give us statistics showing whether we are above or below normal for as far back as their records show.  There have been years when we’ve had more snow than this.  There have been days when it’s been warmer than today on this date and colder too.  It seems the weather will be whatever, whether we like it or not.

Still and all we do weather the weather and life goes on.  So much to be thankful for each day and that old saying I’m to blessed to be stressed does come to mind.

I’m am so grateful for those wonderful  people in my life that make my days worthwhile.  Life is meant to be a celebration of being together and that only happens when we are generous with our blessings.

I’ve been showing the snow here every day this week.  Quite a bit did melt, but certainly not all.  I think I’m going to limit them now to maybe once a week.  Today I’m showing you my little brown bird again and some more of my fake flowers.

It’s Saturday already and another weekend is ahead!  Make it one full of wonderful memories !  It’s our choices that will make the difference.

Chapter 2, Page 21, Book 14

Whatever our hands touch
We leave fingerprints!
On walls, on furniture
On doorknobs, dishes, books.
There is no escape.
As we touch we leave our identity.

Wherever I go today
Help me leave heartprints!
Heartprints of compassion
Of understanding and love.
Heartprints of kindness
And genuine concern.

May my heart touch a lonely neighbor
Or a runaway daughter
Or an anxious mother
Or perhaps an aged grandfather.

Send me out today
To leave heartprints.
And if someone should say,
I felt your touch,
May they also sense the love
that is deep within my heart.

Author Unknown

What ever our hearts and our hands touch does leave an imprint.  Our touch and our love shows in everything we do.

The rain definitely touched our part of the country yesterday.  The snow ordinarily would be washed away by this much rain but since we had so much, the pictures will show you that it is still here.  Now the forecast is for cooler days once more.  Maybe even some more snow.  The A word has returned in the long range forecast.  Arctic that is…

February is merely as long as is needed to pass the time until March.

Chapter 2, Page 20, 2014

The Few Things You Really Need to Remember

Author Unknown

Remember that your presence is a present to the world.
Remember that you are a unique and unrepeatable creation.
Remember that your life can be what you want it to be.
Remember to take the days just one at a time.
Remember to count your blessings, not your troubles.
Remember that you will make it through whatever comes along.
Remember that most of the answers you need are within you.
Remember those dreams waiting to be realized.
Remember that decisions are too important to leave to chance.
Remember to always reach for the best that is within you.
Remember that nothing wastes more energy than worry.
Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
Remember that the longer you carry a grudge, the heavier it gets.
Remember not to take things too seriously.
Remember to laugh.
Remember that a little love goes a long way.
Remember that a lot of it goes forever!
Remember that happiness is more often found in giving than getting.
Remember that life's treasures are people, not things.
Remember that miracles can still happen.
Remember you are you and always celebrate you!

We had a lovely sunny winter day yesterday with temps in the 40’s today we’ll be in the 50’s but it is to rain most of the day.  I got out and took some pictures so you could see how much melting is going on.  The rain today should make a significant difference.  I hope there is a break in the rain so I can get some more pictures to show you.  They may be taken from the porch so that I don’t get the camera wet.

So many times we forget to remember to count our blessings and not our troubles.  Here is what is on my thankful list today:

1424. for a good cherry pie
1425. for our furry friends
1426.  for snow that is melting

Chapter 2, Page 19, Book 14

Only one thing has to change for us to know happiness in our lives: where we focus our attention.

Greg Anderson

Most all my thoughts have been focused on the weather lately.  Here at my house we have had so much snow there is literally little room to put any more around here.  The snow has never been this deep before and today we are beginning to warm up a little so hopefully some melting is going to take place.

I thought it might be fun to take a picture each day of the same view just to see how long it will take before it all melts away.

As you can see we have a long driveway and a little yard.  The house is big but not the property around it  We have a city lot and there’s nothing much else you can say about it.

We’ll see if it all melts before Spring gets here...

I try to learn from the past, but I plan for the future by focusing exclusively on the present. That's were the fun is.

Chapter 2, Page 18, Book 14

Eight ways to be blessed.

Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they who mourn,
for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the land.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the clean in heart,
for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Yes, the Beatitudes are qualities we're called to pursue and I believe that if we live according to the Beatitudes, we will live a happy blessed life.  A beatitude is a declaration of happiness or promised blessing resulting from an individuals virtue or good deeds. We are happy because we have been gifted to live these things.

While doing my usual daily searches for inspiration I found this other set of B’s to live by

Be grateful for what you have
Be mindful of what you desire.
Be positive in your thoughts and conversations.
Be inspired…

Four B’s that will improve your life too.

If you're extraordinarily happy, you might describe what you're feeling as a B attitude.  I do feel very blessed today and most every day.  I hope all these B’s help you to feel the same way too.

Live the B Atitudes and be truly blessed

Chapter 2, Page 17, Book 14

Day by day, as the pages of my own life turn over, remind me that you write my name on the palm of your hand

Isaiah 49:16

Last year my oldest son and his family gave me a book.  Inside were pictures of all the camping days we had spent together.  I love looking through the pages and seeing all the good times we’d had together with family and friends.  I wish I had a book like that for every year I’ve lived.  One thing for sure, it reminded me of just how time flies by.  The grandchildren grew up right before my eyes.

My book of LIFE would have many happy times pictured in it…but it would also have to include some sad times too.  The good thing is that there would be many more good times than bad.  I like to think that all my days good and bad have a purpose and being in the palm of God’s hands gives me the needed faith to be thankful for all the pages.

If we think long and hard about it, our life is very similar to a book. As each page progresses, so does time.  I can just imagine my life as a book and treat this blog as a book as such, filling it in with more good than bad.  As I flipped the page over this morning to write.  This verse reminded me just how important today is.  Life is short and we need to fill our lives with as much love and good as possible.

Chapter 2, Page 16, Book 14

It was only a sunny smile,
and little it cost in the giving,
but like morning light
it scattered the night
and made the day worth living.

F. Scott Fitzgerald

Life is worth living and when I think about it, those smiles have made it so.  Smiles indicate happy times.  Joy filled days and moments in time.

Remembering that even though we have some really tough days, there have also been some very GOOD times.

I've always thought anyone can make money. Making a life worth living, that's the real test.

Robert Fulghum

We may not be all the things we want to be, we may not have all the stuff we want but each of us can do something and that something is important.  We can smile and we can love and very often love starts with a smile.  We want to give smiles and receive them and making someone smile makes my day!

The world is as a looking-glass and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face. Frown at it and it in turn will look sourly upon you; laugh at it and with it, and it is a jolly, kind companion.

Chapter 2, Page 15

Love is love's reward.

John Dryden

Daily perseverance never gets old…  love never ends.

Those that persevere in love, always receive their reward.  Whatever we give in life always comes back.  I think that whatever we do with love does matter and those things often turn out to be some of the biggest things in our lives.

Perseverance is the ability to endure, to persist, to hang on and to carry on through many different types of circumstances.

Perseverance is determination to work hard and to continue, even when life throws curve balls or adds pressures that cause tension and conflict.

If you don’t love, you don’t persevere…that is a great truth.  Without love we won’t care.  With out love we don’t even want to try. Caring is giving love and attention to people and things that matter to you.

To say that love hurts is wrong.  It wasn’t the love that hurt you but the loss of it that did.  I’ve loved and lost.  I’ve had to say good bye to more loved ones than I ever dreamed of, but I loved them and I wouldn’t ever want to take away the love that I gave them or that they gave me.

I will persevere and will love again every day of my life.  Love is there for those with a heart wide open to receive it.

Chapter 2, Page 14, Book 14

I said a Valentine prayer for you
and asked the Lord above
to fill your heart and bless your soul
With the precious gift of love.

I asked Him for sincere love
The kind that's meant to stay
Just like the generous love
You give to those you touch each day.

I prayed for love from family
And from every cherished friend
Then I asked the Lord to give you
His love that knows no end.

A joyful heart is the inevitable result of a heart burning with love.

Mother Teresa

Love your capacity to love and take joy in your capacity to feel and give joy. When you give a little love, you’ll find a lot of joy.  The easiest and most effective way to get joy is through love.   Joy is born when we give our love away.  When we are acting from love, we will find the joy that we want.

Love unlocks doors and opens windows that weren't even there before.

Mignon McLaughlin

Love’s power to transform is one of life’s sweetest miracles.  I have noticed that love for a person generates more love within that person.  Love works some mighty changes.  When there is love, there is beauty. When there is love, hope replaces discouragement and faith removes fear.  When there is love, there is more kindness in our homes and forgiveness in the heart.

Where there is great love, there are always miracles

Love one another and you will be happy.
It's as simple and as difficult as that.

Michael Leunig

ALL YOU REALLY NEED IS LOVE...

Love is a medicine for the sickness of the world.  It is a prescription often given and too rarely taken.

Author Unknown

Love is free, it is a gift.

Love is caring…not chocolate

Love is for everyone

1 Corinthians 13: 4,5

Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,…

Love swims against the current of life’s false fears.

Love works. It is life's most powerful motivator and has far greater depth and meaning than most people realize

Love brings us joy

Love cures people—both the ones who give it and the ones who receive it.

Chapter 2, Page 11, Book 14

All you need is love...

The month of February focuses our attention on love.  Cards are bought, candy is given, kisses abound.  What is about love ?  We simply cannot ignore it's importance.  The month is still bleak and chilly and hence a perfect time to think about what warms your heart.

Hopefully, we'll soon see the winter's wind fad away and we look forward to the approaching spring.  A melting snowman would warm my heart right now.

There are so many different kinds of love and so many different ways to show our love.  It really takes more than a month to cover all the varied aspects of love.  I hope to have more to share with you all the rest of Valentine's week anyway.

Wishing you all a love filled day!

Chapter 2, Page 10, Book 14

It is not the size of a man but the size of his heart that matters.
Evander Holyfield

Getting to the heart of the matter….

This is a phrase that means to find or determine the most important or essential facts or meaning.

For example, it's important to get to the heart of the matter before we make any decisions .

It is about listening to our own heart's longing, learning to trust what we hear, then building skills so that we can move forward.  It’s about all those things in our lives that truly matter to us.

At times we can lose sight of the heart of the matter.  Loosing sight of what really does matter in our lives.  We know there are certain things our heart has told us we need to do, but we seem to have hit against a brick wall.

You cannot let other people tell you who you are or what you want.  You have to decide that for yourself. Sometimes you just need to let your heart take over.

In February we often focus on matters of the heart.  One of the things I think that what really matters to me is that the people I love are happy and healthy.  They are my valentines.  They make my heart happy.

Happiness matters.  It’s been proven over and over how much good it does for our hearts.  I can’t emphasize the importance enough of taking time out of your busy day to do that one thing that will lift your spirit, cheer your heart and put a little spark in your day.

When it comes to matters of the heart, your heart matters. Take good care of it and it’ll take good care of you.

Chapter 2, Page 9, Book 14

What's Hope?

Hope is knowing that a positive outcome awaits.

Hope is not only expecting a dream to come true, but having a deep assurance that it's within your reach.

Hope is saying you can.

Hope is knowing that you can improve and that you always get better with practice.

Hope is knowing that you can achieve your goals through hard work and persistence.

Hope is looking to the future with joy and having an expectation of better things to come.

Hope is the knowledge that life is everlasting, and that miracles happen every day.

Hope is something that never abandons you. Even when your life is filled with sadness and disappointment, a spark remains inside to help you get through the rough times.

Hope is one of God's greatest gifts to you, because it's the magic that inspires you to keep trying, learning, loving, and living.

Sitting here on a cold and snowy morning here in northern Ohio and hoping you all have a wonderful Sunday.
