Chapter 10, Page 21, Book 14

We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.

Thornton Wilder

Storing up treasures in heaven.  Thoughts to ponder...

I know some people who, at the end of each day, put all of the change from their pockets into a piggy bank. It may not be a lot of money, but when you add to it every day, it is amazing how quickly it builds up.

Whether we use a piggy bank or a savings account at the bank, it is a good idea to have a plan to save money for unexpected emergencies or when we want to do something special.  Many of us are simply trying to save for a rainy day!  I try to do it.  I put away a little something in case the car breaks down or the plumbing needs fixed.  There is an old maxim that states:  those who fail to plan, plan to fail.

I’ve learned that we really have no ultimate security in this world.  None of us gets out of here alive, no matter how hard we try.  Our lives are much more than possessions. It is not what we have, but who we are, that truly matters.  One thing we have to be careful of is that the treasure that we are building doesn't become the most important thing in our life.

Treasures are simply things we value and therefore want to have. We want to find, work for, keep, use and share treasures.  It is not lack of material possessions that makes us poor. Rather, preoccupation with what and how much we have  and how to get more of it that impoverishes us.

He who lies down upon his bed at night, knowing he has added a nice sum to his heavenly riches that day is far happier than the man who added a nice sum to his bank account.  Do not turn to your bank account or your broad acres to see what you are worth. Look into your character.

Every dime or dollar we give out of love is a treasure laid up in heaven. Every word of praise and thanksgiving to God, every loving thought is laying up treasure in heaven. Every act of sacrifice out of love is adding to our treasure store.  The giving of a helping hand will gain for us a far greater reward.  Being cheerful and thoughtful to someone who is sad and praying for one another will add to our treasure chest.

I may never have much in the way of earthly treasure, but try to be faithful each day in building up treasures in heaven.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 6:19-21

So true to build up treasures in heaven, Ma, and you listed some great ways to do it too. It doesn't always have to involve money, but time to encourage someone or serve somehow is definitely building up our treasures!
