Chapter 8, Page 7, Book 14

Life is like a grindstone: Whether it grinds you down or polishes you up depends on what you're made of.

 Anonymous

Many people see life as grinding them down. They see the world as full of rough edges that seem to wear away at their being, and may even believe that they must put on and equally hard exterior to survive.

The wisdom in today's quote, however, suggests that a grindstone can produce different results depending on how one uses it. Those who have participated in the hobby of polishing stones, for example, have seen these results firsthand. Often a stone that starts out as rough and dull can, when ground and polished, become a beautifully smooth work of art.

God's mill grinds slow, but sure.

George Herber

The determining factor in whether the grindstone of life grinds us down or polishes us up seems, therefore, to be how we see the stone, how we view life, and how we use this stone, or find ourselves used by it.

We can either be polished by a grindstone or be ground down... The choice is all left to us

Adversity is the grindstone of life. Intended to polish you up, adversity also has the ability to grind you down. The impact and ultimate result depend on what you do with the difficulties that come your way.

The daily grind of hard work gets a person polished.

People always say keep your nose to the grindstone and your shoulder to the wheel. I think it’s important to know what’s important in life and make those things what you focus on.  And sometimes we have to go back to the grindstone to sharpen our thoughts.  We need to polish up the bright spots !

If you can't see the Bright Side, polish the dull side

I would like to think that God is polishing all my rough spots out so I can sparkle in Heaven. Blessings

I remember when the kids were young they had a rock polishing machine that would make the rocks sparkle so to speak. I like the description of life as a grindstone that it can be a beautiful smooth work on art. I'm going to remember that image of a grindstone instead of the usual one that seems to be associated with life. That is a great quote too from George Herber.

Most of us need a little edge took off, and life is the one that can do it.

My grandfather collected rocks and minerals. And it was always amazing to see how the dullest rock could polish up into something so beautiful it took your breath away.
