Chapter 8, Page 3, Book 14

Life is like eating artichokes; you have got to go through so much to get so little.

Thomas Aloysius Dorgan

I have gone through a lot in my life, but I don’t think that I got just a little from those experiences. Indeed I feel like I got a lot !  Our experiences, dreams and goals are layered one upon each other to make the rich tapestry of our lives.  I like to think that the three layers of my life are made up of body, soul and spirit .  It takes all 3 to make us who we are.

We are continually given experiences of life in the form of challenges, joys, suffering, love and confusion. Each piece of life. a different size, shape and color, is an invitation to fit it into our well being.  Each layer tells a story, some we tuck in our heart forever, others we want to completely forget.

Even artichokes have hearts…

When we peel away the layers of our lives, the protective coverings that makes us feel safe, we get to the heart of our issues and sometimes discover the truth about who and what we are.  When we get to the heart of the matter we find that what matters most are the things of the heart.   Heart matters are the heart of the matter.

Take away your protective layers, and open your heart to reveal your beautiful soul. Through an open heart we can learn the art of being humble, compassionate, joyful, peaceful, creative, and loving.

This was a great Post.

I happen to love Artichokes! Yes, it is a lot of prep work to make them as well as eat them.......same goes for the layers of life like in your post.

Ma Sunday: As far as I know I have never eaten Artichoke. But I do understand the analogy. Sometimes we do have to go thru a lot to get just a little; but that analogy is best used when we are going thru a tight spot in life, rather that life altogether. No one can consider what they have out of life, just a little, methinks.

That is one of our cultural codes in our church. Above all else guard your heart. Great post

I liked the description of life as an artichoke. I think it is good advice to peel away the layers of our lives too to discomfort the truth about who we are. I know I need some layers unpeeled :)

Love that Thomas Aloysius Dorgan quote because I LOVE artichokes. A great analogy you offered up today.
