Chapter 8, Page 11, Book 14

Life is like sailing. You can use any wind to go in any direction.

Robert Brault

Life is like a sailboat…When the winds of change blow be a sailboat and let your Spirit be the sail that effortlessly moves you.  This quote is somewhat like the one about Life is a voyage…but with a little different twist.

If my ship sails from sight, it doesn't mean my journey ends, it simply means the river bends.

John Enoch Powell

Once one begins to think like a sail boat, life's storms start to look like a power we can utilize to design a bold and joyful life. Sailboats have mastery over the wind. A skillful sailor can sail in any direction, with the wind, across the wind, and even directly into the wind,  by applying the skill and patience to tack from side to side, coming a little closer to an upwind destination with each turn.

The smooth sailing is ahead, but first you have to learn how to sail.  If you are sailing through life, then you pretty much have your ship under control.  In order to have control though, you need to know a lot about it.  Learning to live in the boat properly requires training.

Life Isn't Always Smooth Sailing.  Sometimes All You Can Do Is Row

Expecting to sail through life without a hiccup is unrealistic.  You might want to sail tomorrow but if the wind isn't favorable, that's not going to happen.  Life is a wonderful journey! Go where you want to go. It's kind of like sailing, once you know how to do it, you put in a little effort and some hard work and next thing you know you're sailing right into the port of your dreams.

I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving: To reach the port of heaven, we must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it-but we must sail, and not drift nor lie at anchor.

Oliver Wendell Holmes

I love this quote by Robert Brault. "Life is like sailing. You can use any wind to go in any direction."

If I have a regret, it is not learning to sail. It is a skill not everyone has. In life it is the same way, some folk do not know how to change directions in the wind, but go with the wind because they have no other option.

I liked that quote from Oliver Wendell Holmes. So true about sailing through life; we will sometimes have pleasant weather and calm winds or rough seas and strong winds; always good to look to God to help anchor us through all the sailing of our days :)
