Reflection on Reading for Today - 2/26/07
The LORD said to Moses,
“Speak to the whole assembly of the children of Israel and tell them:
Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy.
I am the Lord…you are to be like me…do not steal, lie, speak falsely, swear…
I am the Lord…you are to be like me…do not defraud, withhold wages, curse the deaf or cause the blind to stumble.
I am the Lord…you are to be like me…judge justly, do not slander, defend your neighbor’s life.
I am the Lord…you are to be like me…bear no hatred for another, take no revenge, cherish no grudge.
We are made in the likeness of God. And the fruit of our holiness is seen in how we treat our fellow humans. We are to give food to the hungry, drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked and welcome the stranger, care for those who are ill and visit those imprisoned.
We can do this by:
Praising someone who is hungry for encouragement or thanking someone who is hungry for appreciation
Talking to someone who is thirsty for companionship or contacting someone who is thirsty for some sign of friendship
Restoring assurance to someone who has been stripped of their self-confidence or clothing someone in truth who has been stripped of his/her good name because of malicious gossip.
Lightening the sickness of doubt and worry with a cheerful, supportive attitude and being patient with one who is depressed
Setting free someone imprisoned by nerves with a calm demeanor and releasing a homebound person from the prison of loneliness through your friendship
God is showing us that he himself is a Father who treats all his children the same way. We are to show honor because that is what he does, and he is “the Lord.” He does for us exactly what he commanded the Israelites to do for each other. He forgives us. He extends his life and love to us. He still offers us the joy of heaven on earth
Lent is the perfect season of the year for solitude and self-reflection. As we spiritually journey into the desert, Lent is a time to reexamine our boundary lines and get realigned, set in right relationship with God and the world around us.
My prayer today is that I may see the things I need to change so that with God's help I can live always in His light
